@DavidPuddy, is your kiddo thinking Actuary Science??? I have been lurking on the reddit forum and It is a very strong possibility my D21 will go to UTD (99.5% sure) and become an actuary. But she will most likely major in applied math or CS. Most likely applied math.
But if she did indeed major in Actuary Science she would probably have a higher GPA…that is a big dilemma.
I would love to see follow your kiddo’s progress if that is in the future
Indeed, current thinking is Actuarial Science is a field he is interested in. IF UTD is his destination, (again, current thinking) then he would probably select Actuarial Science as the major, since it is a defined major there. At many other schools he is considering, it would likely be applied math or a combination of Math and Finance. One thing about my Son, although he is very strong in Math, he has little to no interest in either Engineering or Computer Sciences.
Since we are near the beginning of this process, many many decisions are yet to come, but at least I have him considering UTD where as 6 months ago he had never heard of the school.
@DavidPuddy While there are some issues with housing availability, not only do McDermott’s have a housing priority, they are required to live on campus all four year. They dorm together freshman year and then move into the on campus apartments. Something I hadn’t known prior to finalists weekend, is that the on campus requirement is year round. They are allowed to come home 2-3 weeks during the summer, 3 weeks and Christmas and 10 days each during fall and spring break. The kids had no problem with us but many of us moms sniffled about not having summers with our kids
My son will be at the school as part of the pre-freshman option for McDermott scholars this summer. PM me closer to whenever you plan to travel and he may be able to help set up a meeting with what staff is available at that time. His summer study is in the field of mathematics (although not actuarial science) so he might be able to locate the right people to help you get some information there.
Division 3 sports are available as are a wide range of intramural sports.
@DavidPuddy, as far as the clubs go, they are a major social aspect of the school. My DD participates both in the swimming and ultimate frisbee clubs. The school is very supportive of these clubs and does provide money for uniforms and travel. The Greek system is small but everybody I have met that is in it, enjoys it. It does not seem to have the same party focus as Greek systems at other universities. There are many ways to volunteer both thru the school and thru clubs. There are also many academic clubs that are very active.
As far as housing, McDermott’s and NMFs do have priority. NMFs do get an extra stipend to stay on campus. As far as a housing shortage, UTD is similar to every medium size school that I know of. They cannot house all students on campus and don’t strive to do so. They want freshman to stay on campus and do have some housing for upperclassmen but they do expect many upperclassmen to live off campus. That is normal for a school of 16,000 undergrads.
@delilahxc , I also did not realize the McDermott’s were expected to stay on campus during the summer. What happens if you get an internship in another city?
Internships are allowed - as is study abroad (which is required.) The main thing is that they are not allowed to take summers off. Summers must be spent taking classes, internships, summers abroad, local volunteerism - essentially something that will contribute to their academic growth. They will have on campus housing regardless of where the summer is specifically taken into but that is figured into their stipend.
Another interesting note on the on campus requirement is that locals were instructed that there were not to go home on weekends. That didn’t affect us since we aren’t even a little local. But they do very much want all McDermotts to be there for one another and to be actively involved in campus life during their four year.
