Difference between San Diego and LA?

Hey everyone,

I currently live in Dallas, TX and my #1 college to go to next year is San Diego State University. I have applied there and hopefuly I'll get accepted. I've been to San Diego, and although it's completely different than Texas, I'm looking forward to being in Cali. :)

Out of curisoitiy, other than San Diego being a lot more laid back, what are the major differences between there and LA? For example, I was watchin that Laguna Beach show (yes I know it's stupid and pointless), and most of them were moving to LA. One of the cast members who was attending SDSU is now in LA as well. Other than that, not many of them seemed to interested in San Diego. I'm just curious why...I mean I'm not saying LA's bad, but it's just interesting.

When I was in San Diego, the beaches seemed a lot less rocky, other than the La Jolla cliffs and Sunset Cliffs. The beaches I see in the TV show seem to be a bit different.

Anyway, hopefully I won't be too dissapointed in SD. :)

I personally like SD more. It's quieter, and definitely nicer I think. LA has a huge "bad" area, while SD doesn't as much. Also, LA is extremely crowded...SD isn't. As for college, being in San Diego must be awesome. No drinking age within a short drive away in Tijuana, Mexico!

Keep in mind that life on the TV show is in no way representative of what life here is really like for the average person.
Its really a personal thing. Some people like SD, some like LA. They both have their pros and cons. Regarding the beaches, you can find any kind of beach you want near both cities. And really, the two cities are like 2 hours at most away from each other, so its not like you totally abandon one by going to the other. They both have that southern california feel to them.

Los Angeles is Hell with a Hollywood sign and San Diego, though in SoCal, is still somewhat nice.

LA, OC, and San Diego all have completely different cultures/vibes/whatever. I'm from Orange County (near laguna, actually) and am living in LA for school and it's been a huge change. Everytime i come home i realize how much living in LA sucks. It takes 4 times as long to do anything or go anywhere, the people are mean, its generally pretty dirty (i live next to bel air/beverly hills and it still feels ghetto), and its just much more stressful.

I think no one ever mentions San Diego as much because for the most part, it's pretty quiet down there. Yeah, they have a big city, but like you said, it's much more laid back. San Diego is kinda where everyone from LA and OC go for quick vacations because its just chill down there.

I doubt SD will dissapoint you. Everyone I know from out of state seems to love it around here (which is why its so freaking crowded). The kids on that show moved to LA to capitalize on their 5 minutes of psuedo-fame, not because SD or Laguna are anything to complain about.

And yeah..the beach thing. Totally different everywhere. Just depends. I hate going to the beach in LA but I'm spoiled by Orange County.

San Diego has much better surf than Los Angeles.

Ah, i love laguna beach. soooo amazing, the most fun place ever. i <3 kristen cavallari! anyways, i'd much rather live in LA, waaaay more fun. san diego is somewhat boring and overrated, i'd rather live in san clemente.

LA seems like a bigger city. So I guess it just really depends on what you want. If you want a big city with horrible trafic but tons of things to do pick LA, if you want a beach where you won't feel claustrophobic from the mass amounts of people pick San Diego.

btw, the laguna beach dingbats are probably going to LA to try to pursue careers in acting (roffle)

I should also add that if you're into beaches, SD beaches kill LA beaches in my opinion.

^

totally true

SD Beaches totally kill LA beaches. Like, totally. There is more swell exposure, there are more reefs and better surf spots, warmer water, and it is closer to Mexico.

That and there aren't a trillion filthy people around to bug you. The only people you usually have to contend with on SD and OC beaches are families (except maybe in PB), whereas in LA I've been approached by all kinds of really shady people. Sitting around partially unclothed in a place as diseased as LA isn't a good idea. Ever.

westwood ghetto hmmmmmmmmmm...

There are some nice parts around LA. Santa Monica and Pasadena are awesome, in my opinion. But I certainly am not favorable towards downtown LA, which is where I live.

go miami!....hehe...don't attend umiami...it's waaay too overpriced!

I love L.A. I live in the Los Feliz area, a couple miles away from the Hollywood sign, and I just love everything here. It is so diverse in terms of people and interests; nothing is homogenous here. We have mountains, desert, beach, city, and quiet areas as well. What's great about L.A. is that it's sprawling, so you never get that Manhattan cramped claustrophobic feeling -- there's space for everyone here. On the other hand, it is definitely true that we've got some un-pretty areas, and our more than fair share of smog. That's what happens when you're the second biggest city in the country. I want to go back East for college, but I know I'll come back and live in L.A., because there is no better place for me.

Actually, Los Angeles is the densest metropolis in the country, more so than NYC. Just because an area sprawls doesn't mean it isn't crowded. Atlanta, now, is a VERY sprawled out area; you have to drive EVERYWHERE. However, you would swear you are in Tokyo in some places with how close they build homes and comercial real estate.

What beaches are a must see in SD? :)

I live in SD (born and raised but attending UCSB) and it less congested, better weather, and more laid back. LA is cool but after a while, it seems, to get overpowering with its whole rushed way of life.
