Difference between state college vs top 50 college in terms of rigor

Hi so my state college is University of Oregon which is not a top 100 ranked college. If I was to go to a top 50 college, how different would the rigor be compared to UO? Would it be a HUGE increase or somewhat similar? One of my applied colleges is Wake Forest which I know is pretty rigorous. Is UO even close to as rigorous or is Wake Forest on another level in terms of rigor?

Thank you in advance.

In what? Since Engineering has an accreditation (ABET) it has pretty much the same rigor across different schools.

Business administration

@“Erin’s Dad” business administration, sorry forgot to include

Top 50 school’s would have better career centers than UO if you plan on working outside the Pacific Northwest.

^ Agreed. If you want to stay in the PNW then UO is fine.

Although, ABET may suggest a baseline for rigor, rigor is definitely not the same among all ABET accredited schools. Since many (if not most) schools grade on a curve, schools with smarter/harder working students definitely have tougher programs.

Not all classes are graded on a curve; even when they are, the curves are often centered at higher grades at more selective schools.

ABET accreditation does set a relatively high minimum standard for engineering major degree programs and associated classes, but some schools or instructors may go beyond the minimum in terms of rigor.

Engineering or not, it is not always true that a more selective school’s classes will have higher rigor if observed by the same student comparing the class at one school versus another. It may be true in many cases, but it is not assured to be true for a given class. For specific classes, you probably need assistance of someone knowledgeable in the subject matter to review the syllabi and exams of the classes you want to compare.

For business, there’ll be a huge difference because lower-ranked business schools really don’t offer a rigorous business major. those majors tend to read less, write less, etc, than other majors. So, yes, Wake is about two levels of rigor above UO for business, or same difference as AP to Regular.
However, it doesn’t mean it’s worth more in the long run (you’ll find a job in th PNW) and especially not worth co-signed loan or parental debt.

@MYOS1634 thank you! that really clarified it for me!

Oregon State has a good business school, but I can’t talk about rigor. I just know a few people that went there and have spoken about the quality of education.
