Both are excellent universities. If you are an in-state student in one of the two states, go to your home school unless the other gives you a scholarship. If you are out of state, the cost difference between the two, although significant (Illinois will cost about 15% less than Michigan), is not major.

Those differences are negligible. Illinois is better in 5 sub-fields of Engineering and Michigan is better in the other 5 sub-fields. Overall, they are rated within five-hundredth of a point (4.45 vs 4.40). Attempting to differentiate between those two Engineering powerhouses is not worth the effort. Both are ranked higher than any IVy League in Engineering!

I think Michigan has several advantages over Illinois once you get passed Engineering. For one thing, Ann Arbor is a nicer town than Urbana-Champaign. secondly, if you chose to change majors to another field, Michigan generally holds the advantage, both in terms of actual quality and in terms of reputation. Finally, assuming you do not live whin convenient driving distance, Ann Arbor is more conveniently located.
