I have completed my UIUC essay and the topic was:-

In an essay of 300 words or less, choose one extracurricular activity, work experience, or community service project from the list you provided on the application and explain why you initially chose it, why you continued with it, and how you benefited from it.

The Georgia Tech essay topic is:-

Please expand upon an aspect (s) of your academic or extra-curricular background that you feel is especially important to you and that will help us to get to know you as a person.

Please explain me how the UIUC and Georgia Tech essays differ?
I wrote about an extracurricular activity in UIUC essay.

I apologize upfront if my post comes across as a little ‘harsh’.

Based on your name, I assume you’re an International and English potentially is not your first language.
FYI - English isn’t my first language, so I think I can relate to this problem (I’ve lived here for the last 6 years).

So here’s my comment:
If you consider studying in the US, you MUST be capable to understand the differences between the two topic descriptions, otherwise I’d not recommend you studying in the US.

If, however, English IS your first language, then I am a little shocked about your question and would seriously question if you should go to college … and I would question your teachers in High School …

You could use one essay to answer both questions, but they are asking for different things. The UIUC essay is asking for you to talk about your extra-curricular activity whereas the GT essay is asking you to talk about yourself using an activity to support the argument.

In short, UIUC is going to use your extra curricular activity (how you became involved and what you learned from it) to judge your character. Tech is specifically asking about your character and is asking you to use an activity to support your point.

@eml2505:- Well, I apologize for not phrasing my question properly.
English is my first language and my CR score is 600 and TOEFL is 107.

What I wanted to know is the essence of the question and not its literal meaning. Of course I can make out the difference, but all I wanted was the perspective of other people in order to be sure if it is in consonance with my perception.

Speaking precisely, I wanted to know if the same activity, about which I wrote about in the essay of UIUC, could be expanded upon in the Gtech essay. If yes, how does the main focus of the two essays differ?

I would really appreciate if now you could give me an answer to my question. Once again I apologize for not phrasing my question clearly.
