My daughter is a dance major at NYU- she loves that everyone in her program is at her level,or above and that they are all as passionate about dance as she is. There are no “recreational dancers” in her program.
In college, many of the students choreograph and set their own pieces and are responsible for scheduling rehearsals, booking studio time, selecting dancers, etc. There are also requirements for learning things like production, music, anatomy and dance history.
The emphasis of the training at NYU is contemporary dance, although she is required to take a significant amount of ballet as well.

It depends upon the focus of a particular college. Is it a BFA or BA program? My DD is in a program that the focus is on ballet and modern so there are not as many tap classes. There is a big focus on student choreography and learning from different master level teachers. They try to prepare the dancer to be multi-faceted. I also have to be honest, some of the “pieces” I have watched over the years can be more artistic, telling stories that I don’t always understand but that also helps in the growth process. The professors at her university really want them to succeed and help them out as much as possible.
