Differences between English R1A and Rhetoric R1A

I am an incoming Spring Admit to the COE doing FPF. I want to send out my course selection form ASAP and I'm trying to decide between Reading and Composition and Rhetoric. What is the difference? I don't really consider myself to be a really good writer. Which is better?

I don’t know the range of R&C courses offered at FPF, but Rhetoric and English are going to be pretty similar… Both of those departments are also the more difficult ones for the R&C requirement.

R&C and Rhetoric are the only courses offered.

Okay, then… If you’re set on doing your R&C for fall semester then those courses are likely to be similar. You’ll read and write, but each class might focus on a different theme or something.

Supposedly, though, those two departments are more difficult than other R&C classes offered so if you’re not a very strong English student you could wait on taking that requirement until you’re out of FPF.

Another option is to do community college instead of FPF, which does not offer many of the courses that College of Engineering students need. For students in the College of Engineering, community college would give an opportunity to take a lab science like physics or chemistry, or math more advanced than 1B if you have a 5 on AP Calculus BC, as well as a reading and composition course and breadth courses (but choose a semester system community college if taking any sequenced courses like physics, chemistry, or math). Use [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) to match up community college courses to Berkeley courses.
