Differences between MEng adn MS (Civil Engineering)

Hi everyone.
I'm a graduate student in civil engineering in Italy.

I would like to know from people who are actually in college or have been what the difference between MEng and MS in civil engineering is.

I'm asking you because I'm considering to move to the USA and I might need to try to get into one of these programs, so I'd like to select consciously which one is the best program for my interests and focus my efforts on it.

Thank you all for your time.

In the US there is no organization that tells colleges and universities what to name their degrees. If the MEng and MS in engineering are offered by two different institutions they might be essentially the same degree. If both are offered by one university department, there will be some differences in the courses and thesis requirements. You need to look at the websites of the institutions that are options for you, and see what the degree requirements are.

For general information about higher education in the US, read through www.educationusa.state.gov and visit the office closest to where you are. There are two in Italy [EducationUSA | Find an Advising Center](http://www.educationusa.info/Italy)

If you are moving to the US for reasons other than studying (for example if you are coming with a spouse), geographical limits might determine where you end up studying. Be sure to take that into account.

^No difference to outsiders; that is, the employers don’t care. So you may as well save the money to choose the shortest one. If I remember correctly, MEng is usually longer with research thesis but I don’t see any point of doing it. If you are that into research, you should do PhD instead.
