Differences between USC and UCLA

I am applying to transfer to USC from UCLA/community college. USC and UCLA are undoubtedly similar, so I'm having trouble making a clear case on my application of why I want to transfer to USC rather than go back to UCLA.

There are subjective reasons I prefer USC, such as the feeling I get on campus, the school spirit, the sense of community, etc. More objectively, I am interested in USC's Narrative Studies major, which is not offered at UCLA, and also in certain minors that are not offered at UCLA, but I wonder if that is convincing enough. For example, if I say I want to minor in Screenwriting at USC, even though there is a Film/TV minor at UCLA?

Or should I simply not compare the two schools and instead just state what I love about USC and plan to pursue there in the "Why do you want to transfer?" section of the Common App?

I wouldn’t compare the schools. Simply state what you like about USC and why it is a fit for you. The fact that you are applying already tells the committee there is something “missing” for you at your existing school.

Don’t try to impress them with your knowledge - they already know they are a great school. Thousands of transfers are applying to USC.

Instead, focus on what you would like to gain in your academic growth, and what you might add to the student body if admitted. If your desire is about the community - then think of it that way. Not what you can “get” but how the environment fits your vision of a college experience.

Also - I’m not clear how a minor in screenwriting would work - but I do think you should focus on your primary major not the most sought after program for a minor. It may look like you’re using your major as a backdoor way of accessing the Cinematic Arts school - which rarely works, from what I’ve heard.

I was wondering about that actually. I genuinely do not want to major in Screenwriting and I actually DO want to major in Narrative Studies instead, but I was wondering if it could come across the way you mentioned. There are actually several minors I’m interested in; I wonder if talking about one of the less popular ones would be better?

A student may apply for a minor in screenwriting under the following conditions:

There is a form to fill out. It is easy. Yes, the doors to the world’s best film school really are open to all USC students.

Don’t talk about UCLA at all. Follow the suggestions in post #2.

Good luck.
