Does anyone notice that females are more likely to use certain smileys than males?

Or Asians more likely than non-Asians?

lol, that's funny ;) :D :rolleyes::confused::cool: :p

^ you forgot :)

thnx :D :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
geez there's a 20 smiley limit!! unfair :(

Like what about the "=)" smiley. Somehow I have the impression that it's mostly used by females - but my sample size is small. I use it though

and then there is T.T and >.<, which seem to be mostly used by Asians... (again, small sample sizes).

No, I agree. I'm a female, and I overuse =)... I try to cut down, but because tone is so hard to perceive online, I use it to show that I'm joking, or that I didn't mean to sound harsh (etc). =)

...yeah, that last smiley was meant as a joke =) Sadly, though, THAT smiley wasn't...

I haven't noticed any non-Asians using it >.<, so I'd say you're right about that.

I only use

:)
:D
;)

and very rarely:  and =)

Well I use ><, ^^, etc... But that might have something to do with growing up loving anime and videogames (many that I loved had chibi animation)

Does o_0 also seem to be used a lot among Asians?

I only see it wrt Asians and Whites who have been exposed to anime...

And what of -.-? the eyes look somewhat azn...

and if that is the case, then what smiles do whites use? Just the classic : p : d : ) : ( =) smiles?

i've never really noticed the ehnicity of the ones using particular smileys, but I guess I could say, as a general observation, that asians use -.- alot, while indians probably use :D alot more often than other smileys, but then again, I'm not that observant.

I tend to overuse smilies on forums, e-mail's and IM's..I have a problem.. . IMO, girls are generally more expressive than guys and ,therefore, tend to engage in smilie abuse more often.

Can't say much about ethnicity based, smilie posting trends.

girls def :) more, from my experience, while guys do :P and :D more. all my asian friends do >< and -_- frequently, but none of my Indian friends do.

interesting - i wonder if excessive usage of >.< and -.- would turn a guy with yellow fever on

I am not Asian and find myself using a large variety of smileys on starcraft. such as : D, -.- ~~ -= and =P

Yeah, I noticed that in my AIM conversations, girls are more likely to use emoticons. Also, teenage girls up to around age 19 are most likely. The Asian ones usually use ^^", ^^, oO, Oo, OO, oo, X_X; etc...

Older people use emoticons sparingly and even then it's usually the typical :) or :( ones. Usually, I don't see the :( used to express sympathy or whatnot online. It's a pretty kid-like response. The older people will probably ask "Why are you feeling that way?" or some variation and probably follow-up with a phone call as opposed to communicating via AIM.

InquilineKea/Simfish, have you figured me out yet? I'm one of your Facebook friends. LOL

i think it's because females are the only ones that really use smileys often, guys use em rarely....welll, i guess "feminine" guys would use them more....
