Hey everyone!
It’s that time again where as a community college student I need to sign up for classes.
I’m planning to transfer to a UC, and I have a few questions pertaining to TAG/ASSIST.
So I have looked into what classes I need to take in order to TAG into UCSB for my major and there’s no problem there. However, my question is what happens if I were to take specific classes for a certain school, according to TAG and ASSIST and I don’t get in??
For instance, if I was thinking to go to UCSB or UCI for psychology and I TAG into UCSB, meaning I take all of the required classes from my community college (as well as IGETC) and for some reason I don’t get in…How would I be able to get into other schools if the classes required are different?
I understand that some schools such as UCLA, Cal, and UCSD don’t participate in TAG, but if you look on ASSIST.org, there are certainly classes that you need to take in order to get into their school with whatever major you choose.
Simply put, if I take classes to get into one schools program and don’t get in, how will I be able to get into another because the required classes don’t line up?
Thank you so much for reading this and any help is appreciated.
This is why you should be aware of taking classes that would transfer to multiple schools imo. I still check assist semi-regulalry to see which classes I take at different schools transfer where. Supposedly you are at a real disadvantage if you don’t complete prereqs for your major that you see on assist. At least if your TAG goes through you’ll have UCSB as a safety net.
@napapapa So do you have a solution or any advice for me? It seems like you’re saying that you just have to try and line up your classes?
Since you’ve chosen UCSB for your TAG and have your classes aligned for that, do you think you could squeeze anything in for next semester that UCI requires as prereqs? If I were in your situation that is what I would do if you are wary that your TAG will not be approved. Regardless, there is no harm in applying even if you dont get all the classes you need for Irvine. I’m sure others will have something to say as well.
@kaylan, I’m not exactly sure what you are asking but what I think you are asking: You need to fulfill the major requirements for every UC to which you apply. So, if UCI has additional classes from UCSB, you need to take them. If you get your TAG form UCSB you then can choose to go there or go anywhere else to which you are accepted.
“Simply put, if I take classes to get into one schools program and don’t get in, how will I be able to get into another because the required classes don’t line up?”
You take the classes you need for each school you want to get into. Period.
I want to get into Berkeley’s business program, and they don’t want financial or managerial accounting cause they want you to take their own. I am applying to Cal Poly’s business program as well, and they require financial and managerial accounting to even be considered.
What do I do? I take it all. Is it always easy? No. But that’s your answer.
In general, if you’re applying for the same or similar major at different schools, the classes required will generally be in the same neighborhood of each other and shouldn’t be that different from each other.
The UC’s are in the process of standardizing the classes required for transfer to different campuses:

@socaldad2 Those pathways are good if you really are starting out and not sure of a direction, but it’s not as great as they make it out to be. I just created a biological sciences pathway for a bunch of UCs for a parent, and while it is true that it covers the primary classes you need, there are so many variables and related majors in biological science, it’s not really cutting it. Each UC has those basics but to be competitive you really have to look closely at each major for the anomalies. If you read the bio pathway it even states that in one of the paragraphs. (For instance, a couple of UCs have different sequence series wanted for math or physics, which seems totally arbitrary and weird, since it isn’t matching the others.)
It’s a good start, but rather limited thus far IMHO. I’m sure it’s better for Sociology or Anthro.
@briank82 This is exactly what I am doing, as frustrating as it can be. I tagged to Davis as a Man Econ major, which requires five classes not required from Haas. They won’t even count as general breadth requirements for UCB so, if i get in and go to Berkeley, those units will not transfer.
What it also means is that my general requirements won’t be complete for either school until next summer, even though I’ve been taking classes each winter and summer session since starting at cc. Thems the breaks though. I could have planned better if I knew about the differences before I started, but at least it’s not costing me an extra year like some of my classmates.
