Different colleges within the university?

What is the difference... I just found that out. Like in UCSD I heard there are 6 colleges. I need some explanation. Is it separated by class, major, honors or what? I just want to know within the UC system.

Colleges are almost always separated by major but state colleges also have honor colleges like Penn State's Schreyer's. I believe in the UC System the colleges are separated by majors (Hass for Berkeley), etc.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

brochure for UCSD, hope it helps in giving you a jumping off point
