Does anyone know how do colleges weigh GPA from different high schools? For example, my son's school has a highest GPA of 4.0 for regular classes, 4.5 for honor classes and 5.0 for AP classes. My daughter's school, on the other hand, uses a different grade point system, where the highest of each class is 100 points, and +3 for honor classes (i.e. 103 is the highest for honor classes.) I'm sure there are probably other variations. So how do colleges evaluate high school students' GPA among these different systems?

As a general rule, they use unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale. So none of those +.5/ +3% things matter (though course rigor as a whole does). There are also rumors that each school has their own GPA recalculating system (the UCs do).

The thing to remember is that kids are evaluated in the context of their environment. A 3.8 from a highly respected prep school is not the same as a 3.8 from a weak public. Don’t worry about the differences between high schools–colleges are more than equipped to deal with them.
