different reasons

Everyone in this thread seems to want to transfer "up," but I'm considering transferring to a school that is quite a bit less prestigious than the top LAC that I'm attending right now. I came here because of my test scores, but the whole atmosphere is so different from what I'm used to (I'm from a small town). I'm not sure if the education here is worth the money, effort and awkwardness and I'm afraid that I'll be stuck-- not really fitting into this kind of upper echelon world but not fitting in with my family/hometown either.
Is anyone else considering transferring for these kind of reasons?

Or at least some advice for me?

It's hard to give advice, because we don't know
a) Where you're attending
b) The type of school you would like to attend (size/location/focus)

a)It's in one of the top 10 for the US World & News Report; I'd really prefer not to get more specific.
b)Rural, smallist, liberal arts (because I want to major in everything but need to make a decision someday).

Transfer to a less prestigious school or stay put?

It's hard to give advice, because we don't know

why do people not want to say what school they go to? what do they think will happen to them?

I don't know about other peoples' reasons, but I am by habit and nature a private person. Also, I would hate for people from my school to find out that I am considering transferring before I am even sure myself.
If you can't offer any general thoughts without knowing the name of my college, then thanks anyway for trying.

ckmets: they get jumped by the advisors :P

It's not like your name is revealed here or anything.. I mean even a very small liberal arts college must have at least 1000 students attending, and I doubt even a half of a tenth of the entire student body even knows or cares whether you are transferring or not.

And btw, LOTS of people transfer due to lifestyle/environment issues. You are not the minority here.

And seriously, if you refuse to give us the college you currently attend, don't expect to get any useful advice. Without knowing your school, there is no way anybody here can tell you something good/bad about the school you attend, which can help change your view on the current school.

The best piece of advice you will get is from someone who either attends/have attended your school or knows a lot about it. And really, not all Liberal Arts college have the same learning/life environment, so without telling us the name of the school, tough luck, but we can't help you.

Yes, some people do transfer "down" for a variety of reasons - don't like competitive atmosphere, want a different geographic location, something about the current school just doesn't fit, work is harder than they expected, cost.... They might not be here on cc very often, but they exist.

It's ok that you don't want to say where you are (although doubtful that anyone could identify you, so it is probabaly safe). So, since you're feeling out of your element because you are from a small town, let's assume that you are at a place like Swarthmore/Wellesley/Haverford which are urban/suburban.

What are some of the schools you'd like to consider? What do you think will be different about them? Have you visited other schools which you now feel would be more comfortable for you? Talk a little bit about these aspects and maybe we can comment. There are lots of schools below the USN&WR "Top Ten" where you can get a truly excellent education. So don't let that specific issue guide you.

i am transfereing down.

from UCLA to Cuny-Baruch.

Oviously location is playing a role in my choice... so atmosphere, i do not like UCLA....... i am not the go-getter that is going to seek out all the things available at UCLA, i have no time for that, i barely have time to wash my hair. I hate sitting in a class of 300 studying what i have to study because there is no major that is more fitting to my desired major.

if your in a top 10 lac.......... oviously prestige is a factor..... and if you can manage through the next 3some odd years than you should, but if your not going to utilize what your school offers, if your going to graduate being an uhappy person, than its not worth all the prestige in the world.

There's a lot to be said for learning to deal with all sorts of people. Are you planning to live and work in your home town for the rest of your life?
