Different ways to interpret prompts

I have a prompt that goes like this: "Are all important discoveries the result of focusing on one subject?"

The little paragraph that goes before the prompt talked about how most important discoveries come from persevering on a single topic blah blah blah.

Can you extend the word "discoveries" to meaning "success" or "reaching a certain goal" for this prompt? I feel that if you just talk about discoveries, your examples are very limited. But would talking about success instead of specifically discoveries grant your essay a 0 for being off topic?
