Difficult Critical Reading Question!

Hello,
My question is in reference to The Official SAT Study Guide Second Edition Practice Test 9 Section 6 #12. I do not understand why the answer is D rather than A. I chose A because the usage of the chemistry metaphor can be inferred from the rest of the passage to characterize the challenges of Black Women because of " White feminists" and "Black political leaders"(third paragraph) as both of these groups faced challenges.

I do not understand the Collegeboard explanation of why the chemistry metaphor suggest "the way certain influences interact to produce a unique perspective." What from the passage suggests this and how do you know?

Thank you so much to all who take the time to answer my question!

Why I think it is not A:

I’m pretty sure that the quote between lines 15-22 doesn’t characterize any challenges faced by some groups of people. The key words to notice are characterizes and groups. To characterize means to describe and/or to portray; the quote does not do either in terms of a challenge. Additionally, in the passage the only group that potentially faces challenges is black women.

Why I think it is D:

I’m basing this answer solely on the following words: “blending” their separate identities into a “combination” and “not just a mixture”.

That’s basically why I chose D, but there still might be some evidence that I’m missing. So, hopefully someone with more experience can help out as well.

When a combination is made, two or more things are brought together and made into one.

The different influences such as racism, sexism, and personal experiences (which are both bad and good) combine to produce a whole unique perspective.
