Difficult Decision Before Tomorrow-I Need Some Advice

Does the transfer admissions staff count nontransferable credits as part of a transfer applicant's GPA? I was concerned about this because of the disappointing grade I just got on my Calculus midterm. I did the math and I think that it is now almost impossible for me to get a B in Calc. I, meaning it won't transfer, but my math could be wrong since I am struggling in a math class. This will tear down my GPA. Without Calc. I, I could probably get a GPA over 3.9 this semester, but this 4 hour class will most likely knock it under 3.5 if I get a C in the class. I have even considered dropping the course right now, since if I plan on transferring, those four credits will have no use and will only hurt my GPA if the Notre Dame admissions staff considers my overall GPA with the credits that will not transfer. But that would leave me with only 12 credits this semester, making me take an overwhelming amount of courses next semester. Should I take a C and a low GPA and hope for a great spring semester, or should I take a W and lose four credit hours (I already have one W)? I would feel very liberated for the moment if I do, but next semester I would feel crammed. And also, if I unfortunately cannot transfer to Notre Dame, I would have thrown away half of a semester and a couple hundred dollars. The deadline for dropping a class with a W is Monday. Any advice?

Have you been accepted to ND already? You sound as though you’ve already been accepted for Fall 2012.

If not, here is the scenario. You’re kind of in a bind. With 1) a 3.5, you probably won’t get into ND, but if 2) Notre Dame sees you dropped a class this late, it will probably know why, hence it will hurt you. 3) If you’re a freshman (I’m assuming you’re not?) and you already have 2 W’s, that’ll be a red flag to ND.

Transfer admissions counts all the classes you’re currently taking as part of the GPA.

If you’re going to drop the course, drop it because you can’t stand it, not because ND might think one way or another. If you don’t get into ND, then you don’t. It isn’t the end of the world. Your sanity matters a lot more.
