Difficult SAT Math Problems

I'm having trouble with this SAT math problem:

Jesse inherits $55,000, which he decides to invest. He uses a portion of it for a low-risk investment that earns 5.76% and the remainder for a higher-risk investment that earns 7.98% interest. The desired total for the investments at the end of one year is $58,500. Algebraically find how much Jesse should invest at each rate.

Isn't it something like
3500=0.0576X+(55000-X)0.0798

That doesn't work at the end you get:

54,111 = -.0222

Hmmm.....that's wierd...I don't know then

Hey, it works, you get X=40045.05
