We attended tour of Miami in April and left with very positive impressions. But it was the general university tour, and we were not able to stay longer to explore engineering school.
When we logged on to the website to try to get more information, the engineering links all redirected to the general admissions website. Frankly, it created the impression that the school did not want to be bothered with undergraduates.
We understand that there is no direct admission to engineering, but does anyone have familiarity with the program? Does it require an additional application once one is enrolled in the university?
Hi, our son is starting this fall in the engineering department. Students are admitted directly to engineering, unlike at other schools. When our family toured Miami last spring, I indicated on the registration form that we were interested in a tour of the engineering department and we were set up with an appointment to meet directly with Norm Krumpe, the chief department adviser for Computer Science and Software Engineering. My son and husband, who attended the meeting, were very impressed. Mr. Krumpe spent a lot of time answering all of our son’s questions and gave them a tour of the department. After acceptance, Mr. Krumpe arranged for our son to sit in on an engineering class during Make It Miami day and he also had two students in the department meet with our son and show him around. Both experiences really made our son feel special and we, as parents, comfortable that the faculty is available and approachable.
There are some other great posts with more information about Miami’s engineering department if you look in the history.
Good Luck with your search!

Thanks for rich reply. Certainly feel like we need to go back to Oxford for more focused visit, solely on engineering. Wish the website were better designed, all the same.
My son graduated in May from Miami with a degree in bioengineering and a minor in mechanical engineering. He loved his four years in Oxford. He started grad school in August at Georgia Tech in their Master of Biomedical Innovation and Development program. He was also accepted into Masters programs at UC San Diego, Duke, Cornell, and USC. Clearly, he got a great engineering education.
Thanks for your response and sorry for the delay in my reply.
Visited Miami again last week with our son, and this time spent all of our time at the engineering school. Very pleased with the emphasis on teaching, and scale of this division put my misgivings about being just a number to rest.
