Difficult Writing Question...

Which of the following is the best way to combine the sentences below?

In royal palaces there were to be found many comforts that medieval castles did not offer. These had dark dungeons and damp, drafty living quarters instead.

(C) While medieval castles offered only dark dungeons and damp, drafty living quarters, many comforts were to be found in the royal palaces.

(D) Lacking many comforts compared to royal palaces, medival castles instead offered dark dungeons and damp, drafty living quarters.

(E) With their dark dungeons and damp, drafty living quarters, medieval castles offered few of the comforts to be found in royal palaces.

Which one is correct, and why?

I would think C would be definitely wrong. Choice E seems best to me. D seems a little wordy and awkward.

E is best.

In C, the phrase “offered only dark dungeons …” is odd. It’s an inaccurate restatement of the original sentences with the use of “only”. Surely it “offered” more than dark dungeons etc. Moreover the comparison between the amenities of medieval castles and royal palaces is not parallel.

In D, the first phrase is awkward, and the use of “instead” is redundant.
