So long story short I'm currently a computer engineering major, but I've decided that it isn't the right major for me. Right now I'm considering MechE or EE but I'm also wondering how difficult is it to change majors within the engineering school. Can someone please let me know?

I don’t know definitively…I think a lot depends on how far along you are in your studies (what year are you?)…a change early on is “easier” simply because there are a lot of common core courses so you aren’t as far “behind” on the 4-year plan. I know my son (sophomore) has had several friends (in engineering) change to different engineering disciplines already and I don’t think it’s been a problem…I would talk to an adviser though [Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Support | A. James Clark School of Engineering](Undergraduate Advising & Academic Support (UA&AS) | A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland).

Before talking to an adviser, I would look over the 4 year plans for MechE and EE to see which courses are more appealing to you

Hope this helps…?

I’m a freshman and I’m planning to change major before the end of the fall semester.

No worries then. I would consider changing to undecided for the spring so that you are not rushed. Many engineering students are undecided for the first two semesters and then declare for sophomore year. That way you will have taken a few more core courses and will have more time to research the different disciplines. I would definitely meet with the engineering advisers to help you explore your options.
