Difficulty justifying the cost

I disagree with - a college is giving them a moral standard.

That’s happened…it’s done. And it’s because of you - and his upbringing.

It’s not because of the school he attended.

I’ve worked with a UND - who is obnoxious, stripper club attending, gambling, womanizing - and yes, with wife and kids.

You have set the moral fabric of your child.

I don’t believe for a second that any college is doing so.

Others will disagree with me but that’s my belief.

Are there other options?

Have him go see ND one more time, if he is debating, and the school will sell itself but you could gently try to point out the aspects that make it amazing . If he already is sure on UCB then let him go! He will have fantastic opportunities both places.

Notre Dame all the way!

Ah…just read through comments…so he doesn’t want to go to ND? Then don’t make him. The good news is that someone will come off the waitlist who has their room covered in ND posters. And your son will be fine.

He’s pretty decided on those 2 schools.
He got into UCLA, Purdue, Cal Poly as well

If he’s sure he wants math, and he wants to go to Cal, that’s where I’d let him go. My only hesitation is that he’s undecided and applied to engineering elsewhere. @ucbalumnus could address the difficulty in changing majors at Cal.

What majors did he apply for at UCLA and Cal Poly?

Changing to an engineering major will be difficult: Change of college - Berkeley Engineering

Math (pure or applied) is only restricted by completion of the frosh/soph level prerequisites with C or higher grades (though they recommend B- or higher grades): Majoring in Mathematics | Department of Mathematics at University of California Berkeley

Applied Math at UCLA, Engineering at Cal Poly

Which engineering at Cal Poly?

Environmental

Well, he’s sort of in a corner. UCB and it’s unlikely he’ll get to choose engineering. ND and he gets an easy ability to switch, but a program that isn’t highly regarded, and REALLY expensive. I was hoping the CP admit was for a more competitive major, as it makes switching easier. Alas, no. Environmental isn’t that competitive. I’d probably leave it in his court and pay the bill.

Agreed but I’d also note environmental engineering is amongst the lowest on the pay scale across many reports so there is a value judgement here too

Yes, CPSLO has an unusual look back criterion for changing major, which is that one’s frosh admission score had to have resulted in admission to the new major if one applied for that major for frosh admission. Most other colleges where majors may be “full” enough to require an admission process to change into them use only criteria since starting college.

Great points – and the last one especially resonates with me. We may yet spend the money, but yech.

Has she made a decision?

Strong lean to ND.

My son waited until 11:50 pm May 1st to choose between ND and NU last year. He ultimately chose ND and loves it there. We are a new ND family and have started to understand, “What’s in the ND Kool-Aid…”

Just wanted to share that I spent time with 4 ND grads this past weekend, ranging in age from 26-35. The two 35 yr olds had their two kids (ages 1 and 3) with them. When the topic of 529s came up I mentioned that ND was about $82K/yr now so what are they thinking. The reply was they’re talking up state schools because the cost is too high in their opinion…and they’re two employed professionals, who loved their experience there.

For me, this is the key. Can you afford the $$ for your child to have a fantastic experience. How fantastic and how likely are subjective. Each family is making that calculation based on their kid and the information available to them.
