Difficulty of an Architecture Major?

Does anyone know the statistics for the acceptance rate of students into the architecture program (undergraduate)?

Estimated acceptance rate for Architecture as a Freshman: 31%. For a transfer around 28%.

Remember acceptance rate only tells part of the story. You don’t know the quality of the pool you’re competing against. A 31% in Architecture might not and is likely not equivalent to say 31% in the bschool.

@eyemgh so would you say that architecture is one of the moderately competitive schools at Cal Poly?

You should check the acceptance posts for the incoming class to see what their stats were. I happen to believe the acceptance rate for architecture is going to be below 31%, because of how few colleges offer the major. Cal poly is believed to triple their acceptance offers (assuming 1/3 will accept), but doing this with arch may result in too many takers.

@susie0102, I don’t think it’ll be as tough an admit as say Mechanical Engineering and I’d say definitely apply if you’re interested in Poly. It’s important though, if you know that you want to be an architect, that you have a safety architecture program, one you know for certain you’ll get in AND you’ll be able to afford. Good luck.

I agree with eyemgh, make sure you have a safety.

There are only 3 traditional colleges that offer accredited BArch degrees in CA: USC and both Cal Polys (this is what makes CPSLO Arch such a tough admit; along with the fact it is ranked #2 in the nation after Cornell for an undergrad BArch - Design Int '16, leading trade pub.). Have you looked at CPP, major is impacted, but could be a safety, if you have the stats. Otherwise, consider architecture/design schools or OOS.

When I got my acceptance letter to arch at cal poly (just this year – I’m starting as a freshman), it said that the acceptance rate was 18 point something percent. The college as a whole has a 31% acceptance rate, but the arch program is much more competitive. But that shouldn’t stop you from applying!

The acceptance rate I posted was based on SLO’s projection targets for next year. These of course are projections and will be dependent upon the # of applicants and competitiveness of these applicants for next year’s spots. With only a few Architecture programs in CA, SLO is definitely competitive.

The BArch at Cal Poly is one of the top nationally-ranked programs per Design Intelligence. And it graduated Weird Al. How cool is that.
