Exactly how hard is to get into UM from OOS? What gpa would I allegedly need? thanks...

depends on ur college.. for carlson school of management u basically need a 3.7+ gpa, 28 ACT, high class rank (at least top 10%)

Look at page #4 of this document to see what is the average. OOS doesn’t seem to affect it as much as the package of what you bring to the table:
http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/PDFs/08-09_FreshAppForm.pdf

D was admitted to CLA and was solidly in the second statistical area for both class rank and ACT. Her gpa is 3.75 BUT she had many leadership/honors including:
4 year varsity letter, 4 year state qualifier, two year captain & one year MVP in one sport
2 year varsity letter in another sport
3 year letter & state qualifier on an academic team
Two year class officer
3 leads in HS productions
National Art Honor Society founding member & officer
Selection for two abassador trips to Europe
and others.

UMN really seems to use a holistic approach as she knows several people with better ACT & gpas than hers who were denied admission.

what’s the big deal with being out of state?

they can’t discriminate against you just because you are coming from out of state..

It’s supposed to be an “equal opportunity” institution..

I don’t know why everyone makes it a big deal on this board…

The only way in state will benefit you is in terms of pre-requisites.. for example, I’m applying to Carlson for next fall, and I’m a MN resident studying at Bemidji State in MN, they will tell me exactly which pre-requisites I have to take to transfer to Carlson at my school, so I have an edge over other students in the sense that I have already completed their pre-requisites while others might not because they took the wrong course or it will simply not transfer…

Being OOS means nothing…

pcristiani, many people ask because lots of stateschools take a certain % of their incoming class from in-state making it harder to get in from out of state. I really do not think that the harshness of your response was something that was necessary to answer Irishguy’s question.

In fact I am going to call you out as being ridiculously rude towards someone who is simply asking a question. If in fact people asking if it was harder to get in OOS did bother you from this thread why did you not start your own thread and mention that, giving evidence as to where you found it rather than attacking? Just a point for you, being in state also means you have completed that schools specific requirements for graduation from HS as most school districts base it off of that. It also means that the admissions committee will know about your school and the track record students from that school have at the University. So being from in-state really can make a difference regardless of policy.

Anyway. To answer Irishguy’s question, as believersmom and zouman said it really depends. On the college and what you do other than school. I am an IB student from Colorado who was accepted to CLA, my GPA may be lower than alot of applicants (around a 3.4 unweighted) but I am dedicated to a few activities and spend tons of time on them as well as taking risks and doing things like IB (its my schools first year) and joining the swim team as a senior. The U seems to have a really good holistic admissions process. The link that believersmom provided will probably give you a good indication. If you fit into the first or second category for the school you are interested in and have some interests outside of studying you are probably good. Now that doesn’t mean you should slack off and what not, but I don’t think that OOS at Minnesota is as big a deal as it is at some schools like pcristiani said, but just pretend it does and work really hard
You might get a scholarship or something.

Good points/advice Play-doh.
Are you settled on the U? If you are, then you and my D are going to be classmates - go Gophers!!!

I’m sorry for being harsh… it was not my intention…

I get the pcristiani, I think I was kinda a little overly sensitive when I responded, but I think we were probably both in the wrong, oh well. What are you going to do?

believersmom, Yes I am decided on the U, and I am so excited! Maybe I will meet your Daughter while we are there! What is she planning on studying?

(sorry for sort of hijacking the thread there OP)

She is planning on the BFA route in Studio Art (focusing on Photography - no pun intended). What are you studying?

Play-Doh, are you going to be at the U this upcoming fall ? which school ? freshman or transfer ?

Sorry for the disappearance all… I had an intense while of IB exams.

I am studying Russian and Linguistics as a freshman.

What about you pcristiani?
