Hey everyone I am considering pursuing business at UT Austin. I understand that McCombs is the school to go to at UT for business. My question is how difficult is it to get into?

My Stats:
Class: Junior
Rank- 45/712 top 6.5% ?
GPA: 3.8 UW/ 4.75 W
SAT: 1970 (first try, will retake in January)
PSAT: 190 :( (should have done better)
Courses: All AP/ Pre AP
AP Exams so far- WHAP-5 Spanish- 3

My school is also pretty competitive and is ranked exemplary.
Based on my stats what do you guys think I should improve? What courses do you recommend for Senior year?

Your SAT and class rank are slightly below McCombs average, but I’d say you have a shot.

I got into mccombs today. i am out-of-state, have a 4.0 uw, 4.4 w, top 1%, 34 act, somewhat extraordinary business specific extracurriculars. I would focus on you standardized testing while you still have the chance. Try to boost it over 2050, shoot for 2100. I recommend taking at least two or three business courses if they are offered at you high school (i.e. accounting, marketing, personal finance, business law). You have a chance if you remain in the top 7%, but you should also just keep getting A’s because I think most mccombs students are top 3-5%. You have a shot, but there’s a great deal of room to improve you application.

thanks for the advice guys! I really appreciate it. There are many business courses in my school but honestly they are a joke. My last business class (Principals of Business Marketing and Finance) the teacher had us playing a Sims like business game the entire time. While it was fun, there was really no challenge and was basically a blow off. Hopefully I will be able to retake the SAT again in January. Hopefully I’ll also be able to over take 10 students this year as well which is basically top 5%. Did anyone with my current stats get accepted though?

Also I am a reseller on Amazon/eBay and make about $5000. I don’t know if this will boost my chances or not.

@FullMetalx I was recently admitted to McCombs with a 1910 on my SAT 1. Actually, @andrewt his scores aren’t slightly below average they are slightly above average. Depending on what you received on M+CR! Although, my rank was higher (I was 3/108)

@fullmetal Don’t worry about taking any business classes as a senior, as they probably won’t add any value at all. Take whatever interests you and just have a fun senior year with your friends. Once you’re at UT, prove you can handle the courses and just internal transfer into mccombs.

I took no business classes whatsoever and I made it into bhp. I think the most important component is leadership. Do what you love to the best of your ability. Take the initiative to make what you want to happen, happen. It’s cheesy, but true.

EC’s are important and you don’t mention those. Make sure you have good ECs or work on that this summer. Competitive schools don’t just want smart - they want involved leaders.

Bump!
Just wanted to see if anyone else can give me some advice. Unfortunately it seems like I am pretty much locked at 6.3%. Although my rank did go higher recently the number of students went down. I am going to retry the SAT this June and will be taking 7 AP classes during my Senior year. I really hope I am accepted. I really only want to go to UT because of McCombs.

@FullMetalx

If you can’t get your rank up then your SAT’s are the next logical option in increasing your chances. Just try to kill it :)
