Difficulty of JHU

I have heard horror stories of Johns Hopkins academics. As a prospective engineering student, how do you feel the difficulty of getting A's at hopkins is vs. Cornell, Duke, CMellon or HPYS. Are there any advantages to a JHU engineering degree vs. the others listed? since I want to go to Medical school, is it wise to go to a school famed for its difficulty? Also can you look at my stats and give me chances at various schools http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/831718-can-i-get-into-johns-hopkins-engineering-ed-3.html

No benefit in going to Hopkins. Considerably harder to get A’s.

thank you… anybody else?

similar thread

anybody???

What I’ve heard about JHU is that their grades are curved a lot-like the average is a B-. With that you’d have to work a little harder to get the grade that you desire. Cornell, I’ve heard, has cutthroat competition because only the top 10 or so students in the class get the A’s and everyone receives lower grades.

Though I think you posted this question as a clever way to get people to respond to your “chances” thread … I’ll bite and share some Hopkins Forums discussion threads that address this general question:

Grade inflation even occurs at Hopkins http://media.www.jhunewsletter.com/media/storage/paper932/news/2009/03/05/NewsFeatures/Grade.Inflation.A.National.Trend-3662935.shtml]Grade inflation a national trend - News & Features
Overall average grades average closer to B+ than B- (though engineering may be tougher). If you plan to major in BME to go on to med school remember my most famous quote from this board: Majoring in BME because you want to go to med school is like climbing Mt. Everest because you want to get some fresh air.
Also IMHO one way to be an unhappy freshman at JHU is to think of it as the first year of an 8 year medical program. Study what you love or are interested in and make the most of your undergraduate years.

Are you a good student? For one thing, your first semester grades don’t go on your transcript. I went out probably 4 nights a week this semester, didn’t start any essays until the right before they were due, and I made deans list. It really depends more on you, how efficiently you can do work and how good a student you are.

HPYS will probably have just as much work but with the same effort you can probably get a better grade. They are notorious for grade inflation. CMU and Cornell are not going to be easier in my opinion, if anything harder. Don’t really know Duke’s work load too well. Graduate schools know that Hopkins is not an easy grading school. Your grades will be looked at in comparison to the average hopkins student, grades are different everywhere.

Thanks a lot. It it good to know that Med schools understand and take into account the difficulty of certain schools. Also than, the MCAT ttakes up an even greater importance if tis is the case.

my 2 cents:

grade inflation exists, i think, at some colleges. there will always be courses that are easy A’s in every school, but generally it is easier to get good grades in some schools vs others.

"http://www.gradeinflation.com/Brown.html" avg gpa 3.61
"http://www.gradeinflation.com/Johnshopkins.html" 3.24
"http://www.gradeinflation.com/Duke.html" 3.44
"http://www.gradeinflation.com/cornell.html" 3.36
"http://www.gradeinflation.com/Princeton.html" 3.28
"http://www.gradeinflation.com/Harvard.html" 3.45
"http://www.gradeinflation.com/MIT.html" 3.26 for 2000
"http://www.gradeinflation.com/yale.html" 3.51
"http://www.gradeinflation.com/stanford.html" 3.55

you should interpret carefully. princeton has some grade deflation because they limit the # of A’s given out to 30-something percent I believe. it’s more evident that there is deflation when you compare their avg gpa to harvard yale and stanford.

i dont think hopkins has inflation/deflation.

i’d say stanford, brown, and yale definitely have grade inflation.

so for example a med schools knows brown and yale have inflation but both schools do well in terms of placement at top med schools (but yale>brown but). lors, ECs, mcat, essays etc would matter more for a student coming out of those schools because their fellow students/peers would also be coming out with inflated gpas.

P.S. i wouldn’t pick a school to attend by difficulty/prestige. just go with whichever one you “fit” best in. consider strength of departments you are interested in, opportunities for development (internships, clubs, programs, etc. that are available to students at the university or in the city/area), and your personal quality of life parameters (distance from family, weather/climate, [strength size and diversity of] student body (i.e. their interests as well as talents, geographic diversity, socioeconomic and ethnic diversity, etc.). there really is nothing else like college in terms of the freedom you have, the range of information you can learn, the types people you meet, and the opportunities open to you the over those 3-4 years …so choose wisely

idk's link for Hopkins doesn’t have the most up-to-date info, so I’ll provide a link: [Greek Grade Information, Spring 2009](http://web.jhu.edu/studentlife/greek_life/GradeInformation/greekgradesspring09.html) Usually, GPA is a bit higher in the spring than the fall, but 3.18-3.24 is the consistent range.

bump it up yo 10

What is the point of bumping this topic??? If people want to respond to your chances thread, they will.

It probably ranks among the top 10 schools in “hard to get an A” along with top LACs like Swarthmore, Carelton, Williams, and top privates like UChicago and Duke according to a 1997 study that I saw on CC forums.

Basically what this says is that B’s are good, A’s are exceptional and meaningful.
I’m good with that - I think most people are. I mean you are being graded by some of the most exceptional faculty in the world & in classes with many of the most outstanding people of the generation.

The purpose of Hopkins is to propagate learning and understanding in a meaningful way. Big minds solving big problems. If you want an easy A, go to your regional college or major in basket-weaving.

If you want to learn something, go to Hopkins.

Please note that in upper-level/graduate courses in several departments (humanities and math for example), professors will not be shy about giving out A’s. That said, those courses are not the ones that have massive waiting lists to get in, and tend to be taken only by those with a genuine interest in the topic.

OK a bragging parent who will duck after posting this. DS1 is a second semester senior with a 3.94 gpa. It would be 4.0 but JHU only counts his A+ grades as an A. If you’re really bright and work hard you will get grades at Hopkins.

Ditto-that is one of the few things that sucks about JHU! I would have had over a 4.0 the last two semesters but A+'s don’t count for anything!

Still intersession for 2 more days!
