Difficulty of Ross Courses...

How hard are the core b-school courses? I'm just afraid that they'll be so hard that my gpa will be too low and then it will be hard to get internships and jobs. Specifically, how is ACCT 271?

ACCT 271 is probably one of the harder ones…but the material itself isnt that hard either. This can generally be said for all Ross classes. The material for most Ross classes I have taken (and I have taken more than a few) are borderline trivial compared to my other classes. The hard part is the competition. On the other hand, you have to seriously try to get a really bad grade because the curves are generally around B+ (A- for some electives, B- for ACC271 when I took it) … so you need to put an effort to work against yourself to actually get in the C range

Material wise, the core classes at Ross aren’t hard. It’s relatively easy to understand intro accounting, OMS and business economics courses. The hard part is the competition. Your grade is based on how other students perform. So far, all the exams I’ve taken at Ross have been quite difficult, even though the material wasn’t that challenging. It is quite difficult to get an A, but also quite difficult to get anything below a B- (Accounting 271 and 272 excluded, which are curved to a B-).

I found Accounting 272 much harder than 271, mostly because there wasn’t enough time to do all questions. We had 90 minutes to do 40 questions, which is basically 3 questions per minute for a LONG accounting problem. However, I’ve heard that electives are usually GPA boosters, so apart from the core classes, I don’t think it should be that bad (I’ll find out this year, since sophomores weren’t allowed to take electives).

As a rising senior, I’m going to have to say that Accounting 271 was the toughest class I’ve taken at the b-school. Be sure to study more than you think you should for exams.

As for grades, it’s pretty hard to mess up your GPA too badly if you take a few LSA classes to bring it up. Plus, it’s really really tough to get under a B- in any of the non-accounting classes, so don’t worry about it.

Electives are usually easier than the core classes, and can be a lot more fun, meaning it will be less painful to study for them =)

Again, the last posts pretty much sum it up. Competition kills.

Interesting. I think maybe its because most students take Accounting 271 during their first semester at Ross and don’t take it as seriously as they should? After realizing that they actually need to study for this class and its not that easy, they tend to study harder for Accounting 272 and find it easier. I’m not necessarily saying that is true for you, but in general, I have found this to be the case among my friends.
