Can anyone shed some light on how difficult the business/finance-related course material is at Wharton for an average-advanced math student?

(I did search for similar threads before posting this but all threads were related to the difficulty of getting in to Wharton.)

If you can get in, you will do fine. I know that no prospective student will ever believe this, but it is absolutely true.

In all honesty the classes like MissBarbara says aren’t that bad…the material (even in very difficult classes) isnt that hard to grasp. The only thing you need to be aware of is that the generally the curve is pretty tough so even if you do well you may end up getting a B (or even a C) - just because everyone is so smart. I made the mistake my freshman year of studying as if i was back in high school - study the night before the exam and ace it…easy to do in h.s…but that just doesnt work at Wharton.

I remember my freshman year in one of my classes I got 22.5/25 questions correct on an exam…you’d think that would be a 90% (or an A-)…it ended up being a C+.

End of the day though it doesnt matter youll do well enough to get a great job…and btw when you start your job you’ll realize how much of a boost Wharton gives you over your peers from HYP who didnt study finance/business/etc…you just dominate people left and right…All worth it in the end :)

Thanks for the input guys! Tough curve though… What would be a respectable GPA coming out of Wharton in terms of getting a job on the big W?

Any other opinions?

So I think the average GPA is somewhere in the range of 3.0 - 3.2.

I would say that generally:
- A GPA of 3.7+ lands you pretty much every interview including all of the private equity firms/hedge funds that recruit on campus…blackstone, bain cap/sankaty, silver lake, etc.
- A GPA of 3.5+ will land you interviews at most of the top banks/consulting firms (McK, BCG, Bain, GS, Morgan, prestigious boutiques, etc)
- A GPA of 3.0 - 3.5 will land you interviews at some of the “second” tier places (lower end bulge bracket firms, middle market banks like jefferies, etc.)
- A GPA of 2.5 - 3.0 will land you at random unknown banks, small middle market places, sometimes second tier places, places like accenture and PWC, etc.)
- Under 2.5 - Good luck getting a job

Notes:
- Most of these “second” tier places are only 2nd tier at Wharton…most other schools consider these top jobs.
- These are just “general” rules…obviously there are people that have lower GPAs thta end up at top jobs and top GPAs that end up at second tier places…mainly b/c of personality, connections, etc.

wow, that was a very detailed and insightful post. Thanks whartongrad08! I wonder if someone could do the same for CAS…

Thanks whartongrad!! Looks like 3.5 and up is ideal.

mathematicism - i know that the average GPA for th college is a bit higher than Wharton…somewhere around 3.4. Having a 3.7+, for example, in the college doesn’t neccesarily get you the same kind of job as out of wharton…its possible put just harder since you are competing with wharton students. That said, most CAS students are n’t competing that intensely against wharton students for jobs since CAS student interests are so diverse…a lot go to grad school, etc…but those that do are usually econ majors with high GPAs that also are able to secure great jobs.

Here are career surveys for wharton and CAS.

[Career Services, University of Pennsylvania](http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/undergrad/reports.html)

As you can see from they surveys, for example in my class (2008), only 4.2% of W grads went to grad school after graduation…while 26% of CAS students went to grad school.

the average gpa at wharton is definitely higher than 3.0-3.2…

as for the difficulty of the classes, wharton’s “math” requirements is minimal. As long as you learned how to integrate in high school you’ll be fine

astonmatinDBS - not sure what the average is now but when I graduated I had talked to a few people in career services and also in the counseling office (or whatever its called now…the one thats in Huntsman thats pretty much right by the entrance from locust) and they mentioned at the average was around 3.0 - 3.2 but didnt give specifics.

it may have gone up over the past 3 years…who knows.

Thanks for the link to the Career Services surveys whartongrad - I had no idea those things were published!
