Difficulty of this class schedule

LS 2
CS 31
CHEM 153A
Research (Chem 199, 10 hours a week + 10 page paper option if I want 4 units instead of 2)

I'm wondering how tough chem 153a is since I haven't taken the LS series, but for the most part, I feel like I can handle both LS 2 and CS 31 but this added course might be a bit tougher. That said, I'm taking Physics 1C, 4BL, Chem 30B, 30AL this quarter so relatively it looks easier (on paper).

i know this has nothing to do with your post but what were your SAT/GPA/rank ? im just wondering :)

I think you would be at a considerable disadvantage in 153A without the background of LS3. Is there any particular reason why you would want to arbitrarily jump into 153A at this moment?

How are you faring with your current schedule? It may be difficult in terms of sheer volume of work, but you still have all the background or at least are on equal footing with everyone else. That will not be the same with 153A (and LS2 will start off very slow, but towards the middle, you will start getting barraged with stuff to memorize- which I guess would be similar to 30B if they switched around the schedule and did the much easier IR/NMR stuff first before they went into the chemical reactions/mechanisms).

You would probably be better off just taking 30C at that time or 30BL (if you don't need 30C) in place of 153A and just save 153A to take concurrently with LS3 at the earliest (so you at least will learn the background eventually in the quarter that you're taking 153A- you'll just be a quarter behind everyone at the start of 153A, but the gap at least will slowly close, even though you'll never catch up in time before midterms/finals for 153A).

I guess the good news would be that at least you'd be ahead of the pack in your LS3 class (unless the people there are in some molecular biology research lab, then they'll be leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else)

I think I'll switch and take 30BL over 153A, I was looking at those reqs. and it looked tough, however I'm holding fine with the courses. A lot of work - tons and tons of it. But my physics prof has easy exams, and for 30B I'm not exactly where I want to be, but I'm in a position where I can get an A (need to do well on a quiz this week). I did take AP bio in high school, and I feel like that translates to LS2/3/4 (except more in depth), but then again i haven't take then course. I feel like I can handle 3 relatively difficult courses, although I may be taking up an actual job in addition to my research, but that is still TBD.

satscholar: top 3% from 675 person school, SATR: 2180 STIIs: 770 & 730 IIC and USH/BIOE respectively. 3.91 UW 4.36W GPA from ~690 API public school in northern cal. I scored one of the highest sat's from my school.

How'd you swing Chem 199?

And I don't know what to think about that 30B quiz this Friday. I guess I just need to do more NMR problems :)

it's just the general course for directed research, I just emailed a professor on a whim and got a response. I'm doing SRP 99 this quarter, only because my units didn't clear in time for me to do CHEM 199. Upperclassman standing = chem 199.

Yeah, I think its much wiser to take 30bl in place of 153A next quarter. It would help to hold back on 30BL until after 30C (or at least take the two together- which I do NOT advise if you plan on keeping your other courses as well) since unlike the other two gen. chem labs where the lectures may not necessarily have helped (except maybe 30B helping in interpreting the NMR/IR in 30AL but not completely necessary), there actually are concepts covered in 30C that WILL help- or at least greatly helped me in 30BL. I definitely would not have been able to have scored as high on his final exam had it not been for 30C that I took concurrently with the lab course- 30C really consolidated everything, and there were reactions that were first covered in 30C that ARE integral/the main reactions for some of the 30BL labs that you will not have had covered in 30B (Bacher is a fair lecturer and all, but he simply does not have the time to go into the details necessary like the 30C professor will have been able to- and plus hearing the materials a second time from Bacher will only help for both his lab as well as the 30C class too).

From the looks of your other post in the other threads, it looks like your GPA really took a thrashing. I really don't know why you would want to rush as much as you have been with your courses- did you just switch majors or plan on graduating early? I have taken a course from each of the 3 science series + some GE on the side before, but never did my schedule look as ugly as your 2 labs + 2 science classes- as bad as my schedules were, yours is just academic suicide (usually 3 science or 2 labs + 1 science lecture is fine, but to try and go beyond that is pretty terrible)

Well i mean, I feel like I can get A's - I did really well in 30A last quarter, and I can throttle back some of the labs. BTW, i'm a Bio-engineer, so no 30C for me. I'm trying to graduate in 4 years, I ended up taking math over the summer so I'm completely down with all the math I need to take. I took a beating my first two quarters, however I got a 3.5 spring quarter. I'm maybe a have standard deviation above the mean currently, but i can pull a bit further ahead.

I wouldn't really recommend this schedule to anybody though, there's a handful of people I know who are on similar lines, not the most entertaining schedule, but I'm trying to lessen the load for later.

Double posting.. but for the winter quarter where I had a 2.8 GPA, I had 3 midterms on the same day for both sets. A little bit of a murderer - on william's final for Physics 1A i scored in the top 10% in the class, and I didn't get an A since I had done so poorly on midterms. I feel like there isn't much room for maneuvering in engineering - just got to tough it out since I'm on the 4-year or less plan.

Oooooh you're one of those engineers (I should have guessed from the 1 series, but I thought you could have also been one of those eager types trying to take the most difficult courses possible because I have friends like that who now regretted that unnecessary route). That would completely explain it since I'm assuming you have all your courses mapped out already. Are you using your summers to help space out the course-load? I hope things look much better for you in the long run and that your hard work now will pay off with some much needed relief later on

Yeah well, i took out math 33B and writing II (so i can take easier GEs). It looks like it will work out. Schedule is a bit weird for winter quarter since they screwed up the offerings of LS 2 & BE 100. I was considering doing LING 1, LS 2, and CS31, but I really feel like I should be taking a more difficult 3rd filler class since this is one of the few quarters I go with just three classes. The research course should boost my GPA since I can request a letter grade (for 4 units!), woo. Are you pre-med jyancy?

Yes, but I plan on taking some time off before I begin that excruciatingly long course

Is LS3 really that helpful for chem 153a? I'd rather not have to take LS2 and LS3 if I don't have to. I hate biology.

Hmm... I guess its been too long since I took 153A or I'm just mixing the biochem classes up. I looked at the current professor's syllabus (I guess you missed out on the infamous Bates experience) and from the looks of it, it seems like you can definitely get by with just LS2 background. Of course LS3 would help, but not as much as I think anymore, especially if you have an AP Bio background (in LS2 you preview the four building blocks, glycolysis/TCA/e- transport chain). LS3 would be more helpful for 153B than A, although it would solidify what you would learn about the main polymers covered again in 153A, but I guess it wouldn't be detrimental (or maybe as helpful) for A as it would be for 153B.

im takin 153A right now...its insane....

im just finishing 14D right now and am trying to take LS3 next quarter. Would you guys say that taking a quarter break from 14D to biochem would be a mistake? Like would I forgot some important stuff? Thanks
