I really don't know what "precalc" is, but have heard that it covers some algebra topics.

Varies widely by school, or even by class. In its traditional form, it's a glorified review class, just like pre-algebra. Also like pre-algebra, a huge waste of time, unless you struggled the first time around, in which case it's probably useful to get that review. My precalc class was a good one - we covered topics that we hadn't seen before, like analytic geometry, matrices, trig proofs, the polar coordinate system, and limits.

My son thought pre-calc was a waste of time, or at least that he should have done it in the summer (as a number of kids did) to zip through it faster. They did start in on the calculus book in about April (we have school through June). We have AB Calc and BC Calc as independent courses, not a sequence.
