Dificulty getting into classes

My son attended the recent (August) advising and orientation session and is reporting that most classes are not available including calculus 3 and CS (they are full). He is left to take courses that he really doesn't want to take that are not relevant to his intended course of study (CS). Has anyone else experienced this as well and does anyone know if this clears up and some of the classes that were closed become available? Thank you for any guidance you can provide.

Take a look at the tip for closed classes on the site. Worst case scenario, he has to take a class or two for the AoK requirements (which he’ll have to take eventually anyways) and put off math for a quarter. Another place to check is the FIGs. He may be able to get into a class that route that is otherwise closed.

Thank you very much. We’ll give that a try.

I had Notify.UW text/email me when a spot was open in the first of the series of CS courses. I managed to hop on immediately and grab it about a week ago. But remember that there has to be a quiz section open too if you are to register the class. He can also try to petition, but I’m not sure how well that works here as I just transferred in this quarter.

Great tip! Thanks.

UW Notify worked great for me. I also signed up with UW Reggie. UW Notify is almost always faster though. Reggie is a good backup, however. It did notify me first once.

Don’t worry too much. People always drop courses when it gets close to the start of a new quarter. Make sure he uses something to subscribe to open classes like UW Notify because they can close really quickly. Don’t forget that summer quarter is still going on for another week, and that grades for it aren’t due until August 28. People that are taking Calc 2 right now, and are scheduled for Calc 3 in autumn, may fail this quarter, thus opening up more spots. Just be on the lookout!

The math dept may also open up additional sections. They often do this when all sections fill. Also, there is an online section of calc II that has plenty of space.
