Digital Arts & Communications

So I'm in high school right now, and I plan on studying at a general college/uni, not a specialized institute for the arts (such as Art College). I want to study digital art/animation/digital design, but I also plan on dual-degreeing or double majoring in communications, because I plan on becoming an editor for a publishing company as my back up.

So what are some general schools with a good art/tech and writing program? I plan on going more specialized for my master's later down the line (probably in digital communications if I'm successful //crosses fingers), so I want a well-rounded college experience for my undergrads.

Got any suggestions?

DePaul is nice.

Awesome design school with a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Communication Design. Features Professional Practice Program where you alternate quarters of school with quarters of work at actual design jobs.

[Cooperative Education, University of Cincinnati](http://daap.uc.edu/about/cooperative_education.html)

Its a really competitive program and they begin accepting applications August 1.

I went to this school (granted, many years ago) but it’s reputation is stellar. Absolutely worth checking out.

UC/DAAP is a great school–but the curriculum is VERY focused, no way to double-major or even minor in something else (unless maybe you took courses at night during your co-op semesters, which would be pretty tough to work out).

So if you are looking for a broader experience (more English/writing courses, a communications minor, etc), it would probably have to be elsewhere.

UC is a great option, though, and worth considering…just different than what OP described.

I went there, too, (long ago!) but curriculum is still very rigid. You only have room for a few electives, and the studio hours and demands are so high, that for me at least, taking extra courses would never have worked. (in studios probably 30 hours a week for class).

Maybe Drexel also.

@Poi: I actually went and visited Drexel, but I couldn’t stand the campus.

@Grizzy &IUmom7: UC looks promising! Though I really do hope to double major and explore other classes… Do you two have any thoughts about the school’s double major program?

I actually had to drop the idea of applying to NYU–the academics + majors were perfect, but the school lacked the sort of well-rounded college experience that I wanted. :/

University of Denver has an interdisciplinary Digital Media Studies program. I think there might be one at Champlain College now. If you email Jeff Rutenbeck there, he might have some insight on programs at different schools.

Check out the following schools,

Elon Univ, North Carolina
Fla State
Ithaca Colllege
