I'm going to purchase a digital camera sometime before college starts, and I'm looking for one. It doesn't have to be one of those huge cameras that people use to go out and take pictures of nature, just something to take pics of friends, that type of thing. I'd be willing to spend up to 250, or even 300.

Get the smallest, sexiest camera you can find unless you want to be labeled "the photographer." I have the sony dsc-t1 (since 2004, they've had a few iterations since then) and it has not failed me - the photos I've taken have made the camera repay its cost 10x.

Can't go wrong with canon's powershot line. I have the SD630 and i love that thing to death. It has one of the biggest lcd screens for a camera of its size

if you're willing to spend around $250 you can get a really nice one. either get nikon, canon, or sony. kodak...i dunno, i've just never liked their cameras.

My family owns 2 canon powershots, and the newest one we have is the SD600. I think that canons are one of the best camera's ever. They have the highest quality cameras that have very good features, and take amazing pictures. I would recommend the SD600 (the SD630's view finder is huge, but i dont like the layout as much). If you want a higher megapixel camera, you could look at the SD1000 or SD700. Im sure you could find great deals for these.
You should look on ebay for some of these. You can get them brand new for cheaper than retail (just be sure to check the seller. if their rating is 95% or higher, you can buy from them safely). I just bought a camera from ebay (and alot of other things) and it came quickly, and as described, so if you want to save money, i recommend doing that. good luck!

The Olympus FE-210 is around $150 and is a great camera (I have the FE-180, which is no longer available, but it cost me around $150 and I absolutely love it).

In general, I'd suggest looking at circuitcity or bestbuy websites for cheap cameras, then going to cnet.com and seeing which of them got good reviews.

I'm always amazed by the super expensive prices on most cameras. I want a digital camera for college but because the cost is so phenomenal, I'll settle for a decent one on my cell phone...

Go to a Best Buy or some store like that and look at the camera display. Pick them up and play with them and see which one(s) you like best and which features you need, how far you really need to zoom, etc. All of the extras will cost more, and you can get a good, simple camera for a fairly decent price.

Another vote for Sony. I got mine as a graduation gift over three years ago, and it's still working just as well ever, even after a few drops on concrete. I took it with me for a semester abroad, and even though my camera was older than a lot of the cameras of others with whom I was traveling, my pictures often came out better, particularly with action shots and pictures taken at night.
