Digital design options for D22

We are learning the vocabulary of what D22 is interested in which is a using technology for design. So far we’ve found majors/concentrations called digital culture, film and electronic arts, graphic communication, communication and media arts, new media design, and arts and entertainment technology.

Are there any other search terms sh/we should be using?

College/university suggestions welcome. Not looking at art only schools due to possibility of changing tracks.

D22/junior is in her second year of high school art at her academically focused high powered public magnet. She is currently taking an audio digital production elective and has taken an electronic publishing class. While she has spent time working on her own art projects and also took art classes in middle school, her interest in pursuing this track in college is more recent. In retrospect, the fine arts magnet may have been a good choice, but that is water under the bridge.

Finances - We can afford Texas in state tuition. For more expensive privates, we would prefer merit/aid to bring down costs to $40k/year.

No tests in hand but expect 30 plus on ACT (30-33?) based on administered practice test last spring. High school doesn’t rank due to school taking top 10% kids from district. Talented artist with very good academics and likely scores but not in the excellent range. Strong record of leadership in extracurriculars. Does not want to attend a small school in a small town (but hasn’t visited this type of school so still feel free to suggest small options). Open geographically except for “the south” (meaning the SE) although she will be applying to some Texas publics. Liberal and open minded.

My DD’17’s major was called Graphic Design and that’s how it was listed in most places we looked.

She went to a community college and was done in 5 semesters, with as many graphic design credits as a Bachelor’s, just fewer gen eds. So I’m not much help in suggesting four-years.

But I will suggest if she pursues this major, that she look up the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation. They give out hundreds of scholarships for students in the major. DD’s was renewable.

Digital Media Studies at University of Rochester (NY) has quite a variety of courses that can fit the major. DMS can be in the humanities or physical sciences divisions, depending on where the majority of the student’s courses are from. Very feasible to double major or minor there.

City setting but not a huge city, and campus is tucked into its own nook between a river, a medical center, and a historic cemetery. Diverse, collaborative student body, with about 1/3 international students some years.

The hurdle might be the price - I don’t know if scholarships/aid would bring the cost within your desired range.

Thanks for the help with the terminology and I’ll point her toward the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation.

We’ll add Rochester to her list to investigate. My brother went to U of Rochester back in the day and I’ve actually visited the campus. I picked my brother up at the end of his freshman year because my parents were busy with work.
