Hey,

As a current freshman undergrad BCMB major and spanish/math minor, I've gotten sick and tired of having serveral notebooks lying around for every subject etc.

Currently, I use a 1 subject for math/chem notes, and a 3 subject for the homework problems. The rest of my clases I used 3 subjects for notes. This gets very cumbersome after having several classes in a row and needing to carry around everything, but at least it keeps me organized.

I want to get out of that though and I'm looking into digital note taking. With the iPad just released, I thought it would be the perfect solution, but there is currently no available sylus to use accurately.

While holding out for the stylus, I thought about using a Wacom tablet with either Word or some other app on my Mac to digitally take notes in class. Does this seem feasible? The added benifit would be having all my notes in one place, homework in one place, everything organized and in one location.

The model I'm looking at is the Wacom Intuos4 Wireless.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

It seems feasible, but the Intuos is overkill. That board, if used just for notetaking, is really too much money. It’s usually meant only for the best graphics artist.

Personally, I think there’s a lot to be said about typing. I put all my notes on OneNote and I have no problems with it whatsoever.

I understand just typing would suffice for the most part, but I feel I learn better by actually writing things out, rather than namelessly typing. Plus, equations and what not would take forver to enter via text

Well, if you’re just going to write, then a typical $20 8x10 tablet will do just fine. The reason why tablets like the Intuos are so high is because of their pressure and writing sensitivity, both of which are irrelevent if you’re just writing notes.

But beyond that, if you’re fine with carrying a tablet, go for it :)

the intuos is definitely overkill for just notes… you won’t need it unless you’re an extremely advanced digital artist.

a simple cheap tablet would do then, like r31ncarnat3d said.

Thats a good idea! I can’t wait to give it a shot!

I’m going to try a cheap tablet from monoprice, and if I like it I might invest in a Wacom, maybe sketch in my free time. Who knows!

Just ordered a 8x6 tablet for a cool $36, I’ll let you guys know how it goes.

You should check out the pulse pen… my D loves it…

i got one of the cheap bamboo tablets for around $60 or so at best buy i think and i’ve used it so far for trying to draw things in photoshop. but i’ve tried the note taking thing they included it with it and it’s not too bad. so i think i will actually bring it with me to college with my laptop to see how that is. i’ll be a freshman next year so i need to figure out what is best for me to record notes (whether it’s typing them on the laptop, using the tablet, writing them with pen or paper, or even buying a livescribe since the reviews of it are really good and even the ones on this site of it). but if you for sure want to take notes with a tablet, i’d just recommend one of the cheap ones or just a bamboo like mine. the intuous are definitely going to be way more expensive and have more features than you’ll need for just note taking since a lot of pros use them for digital artwork and stuff

Sorry for my delayed response. The end of the semester gave me no time for anything else. I gave it a shot with a cheaper tablet from monoprice, and it didn’t really go as planned. Maybe the tablet was inferior but i couldnt really write as precise as I needed to for math equations and such, and since that was really the main point of me trying this out, it was a no go. I returned it and chose to stuck to pecil and paper.

On a brighter note, my gf found these pencils (we love school supply shopping) and they write like a dream. I almost want to do my calc homework everynight just to use these bad boys. They’re ICY pencils, .5mm lead, we got ours in Walmart. I’ll never use another penicl again! I tried my .7mm pencils in a class, and it was like writing with a tree trunk!

If anyone has questions about using the tablet, feel free to ask/email to saladinom2[at]gmail.com, I tested it pretty extensively.

Here is a link to another forum which explains how I took digital notes in class. It’s really easy and it’s the cheapest option on the market.
