My D’s teammate/best friend went on a DII unofficial visit and the head coach said they don’t offer a spot until she applies to the school. Does it mean she will be a walk-on? Will she still get some scholarship? I know I should suggest her to ask the coach more specific questions but I don’t want to make her worried, so I want to get some idea before I share what I know. Thank you!
This might just be the policy of this coach, that she wants to know the student can be admitted before making a commitment. My daughter’s coach does send the basic info - gpa, hs transcript, test scores- through the admissions office to make sure the student can be admitted before offering money or a spot. She may even do it now before offering an OV (we were the first year and coach was just learning the system too).
Coaches can do whatever they want. One coach at a D2 school told us she doesn’t give athletic money to freshmen. If that is correct (and we weren’t the only ones told this), then everyone is a walk on because if there is no money, there is no NLI. This school lists 15 or so freshmen recruits every year for the sport.
She can ask the coach to explain the mechanics of the admissions process, the commitment, the FA to her. It’s okay to ask because everyone is new at this and it’s fairly complicated, plus every school handles it a little differently than the last one you talked to.
Thank you! I haven’t talked to her about it since she is still thinking of staying local and playing at a JC.
