Here's the deal...I got waitlisted at Columbia, and I was pessimistic, thought I wouldn't get it in and forgot about it...Meanwhile, at University of Pittsburgh had awarded me the Chancellor's Scholarship, which basically means I go to college for free for 4 years (or 5 if I want to do dual degree), and they are giving my a one time study abroad money. I'm all ecstatic and have decided that this is it, this is my college; except on May 18 I got the BIG package from Columbia saying I have been accepted. Columbia had been my dream university and I loved it, and it is in NYC and I am sorta interested in some acting and all that...
The problem though is that, Columbia is pretty expensive for my family (not impossible) but I want to do medical (right now but I am not sure if I will stick with it) and as you all know medical schools are damn expensive...SO should I go to Columbia or Pitt? I am completely torn right now; any input would be helpful!
I have sent Columbia a letter appealing their financial aid package, and hopefully will hear soon...but if someone can give me definitive reasons, I would be eternally grateful!

dont go to columbia...more spots for everyone else!

Hmm.... i was in the same position as you, pretty much, after regular decision. i had columbia on one hand, great name, great school, extremely expensive. and then there was rutgers, decent school that gave me a lot of money and i would have had the possibility of earing higher [this is me speculating] grades and maybe graduating earlier. it was also a huge financial decision [just like you, expensive, but not impossible] and i was considering med school.

the reason why i chose columbia was because i absolutely love the city, and i think the core has a lot to offer. it was also cause i'm probably not considering med school as much as you are. and so after digging deep and weighing everything out, the huge amount of debt i'll be in will surely be worth the experience. it's an offer i couldn't let down. i knew that if i didn't choose columbia, i might end up regretting it. there's no way i'll regret my decision.

so the final decision is yours...

[sorry this might not have been cohesive at all, but feel free to ask questions, i hope this helps]

It does! Thank you...it is making the decision that is so damn hard - I too love the city, my interest in acting is great. I am a very much a liberal arts person who wants to do engineering. My parents said the decision is ultimately mine, but I feel the guilt... I think I would fit in Columbia really well. Well we'll see what happens!

yeahhh... the columbia structure fits you very well i think. you can have an engineering major, but the core will give you a lot of liberal arts instruction, and i'm sure you can fit in acting through a minor or activities etc. and besides, you get cheap broadway tickets =D
