I didn't plan to apply to private colleges until last week because my friend convinced me to expand my horizon. Unfortunately, I need 2 letter of recs for the ones I'm interested in. I managed to get one from my AP Chem teacher but I don't know if I will be able to get a second one because it's pretty late to ask for one. Does that mean I won't be able to apply to those privates that I'm interested in? I read somewhere that if they get at least one rec, they will still take your application because the other one might have been lost in the mail.

What is the application deadline for regular admission? For most schools, it’s January 1 or later. That should give you plenty of time to expand your horizon.

Ask for the 2nd letter. Just say you decided late to apply to some privates, so sorry if it is late notice. As MiddKid86 points out, you should still be giving them several weeks notice so it shouldn’t be that big a deal.

I will try to ask my teacher, but I think teachers usually have a certain quota and once it’s filled out, they don’t plan to write anymore. What if my teacher’s quota is full?

Editing because I see your broader list was only posted today.

Speak with your GC, if you have concerns all the obvious teachers may exclude you. If you have the qualifications for those schools, you should be able to grab this bull by the horns, as we say.

This is a real problem. My D couldn’t get a second recommendation - she waited until April of junior year to ask her math teacher and that was too late. Another teacher who she had sophomore year and who she was supposed to have again senior year left the school and wasn’t going to be considered a junior or senior year teacher. She ended up not applying to colleges that required two recommendations. Her first choice only required one and she got in ED so it didn’t matter, but it is indeed a real problem. I wish you luck.
