Ok so I applied to a summer research internship at a local university that I was told I was a strong applicant for, so I'm expecting acceptance. However, I am now faced with a dilemma: the school opened up a summer art class that would fill my school's 4.0 art class requirement. Taking this class in the summer would free up a class period in which I could take another 5.0 AP and keep my class rank. If I choose not to take the summer art class I will inevitably drop to 2nd or 3rd versus being ranked 1st at the present moment as the guy behind me will jump at the opportunity to become valedictorian.

So my question is this: Is it worth it to give up my summer and my potential internship to be valedictorian versus 2nd or 3rd?

PS: Just in case it helps, I'm an African-American male looking for acceptance into the Ivies and I've already been accepted to E2@MIT.

To be honest I think it depends on what you want to do actually. Personally, I wouldn’t give up the internship…

No. Only an incredibly superficial and depthless individual, would sacrifice an opportunity like the one that you may potentially have, just to be “valedictorian”. In fact, when I think about, it sounds really ridiculous. Why waste your summer taking an art class, when you may potentially have an opportunity to advance yourself academically and intellectually?

If you’re accepted to the internship program, I say, GO FOR IT!

But, of course-- some superficial, valedictorian will dispute my statement and tell you otherwise.

Thanks for the advice! I want to go into the medical field so I’m definitely leaning towards the research internship should I get it. It’s just that it’s been a goal of mine for a really long time, and now that I’ve achieved it, it’s that much harder to just let go.

Meh, I’m probably been superficial anyways. I know that the internship would be the right thing for me intellectually, but I’m having trouble weighing it against how it might look in college admissions…

please, please don’t be a class rank monger. Please don’t.
