Dilemma:Toronto or WashU

Should I go to Washington University in St. Louis or the University of Toronto. I want to major in biology and go on to become a doctor. I'm mostly concerned about academics/prestige of the schools since I'm sure I'll have a good time wherever I go. The only other issue is a question of cost. I didn't get any financial aid from WashU so I'd have to pay the full $35000 tution and University of Toronto costs next to nothing (4000-5000 tuition).

Thanks in advanced guys!

Where you go undergrad really doesn't impact upon whether you get to med school (maybe which med school, but who cares?). It's HOW you do. Do poorly at Wash U, forget it- do well at UT- great.
Case in point- we have a fellow in our program, undergrad from Western Ontario, med school at Upstate NY, OK residency- but shone. Now in one of the best fellowships in the US and shining.

dufay, based on your understanding, which school do you think I have a better chance of doing well in? I've heard that WashU's premed is very good at preparing you for med school but I haven't heard anything about UT premed. I want to go to med school in the states so I guess that factors into things. I'm really not sure

i think wash u might hold more ground un the US
but toronto everywhere else (i think it is technically a better and more prestigious school)

Preparation for med school includes taking the required classes (chem, organic, physics, calc for some schools, bio) and MCATs. Major in whatever you like, do volunteer work, work in a research lab. I don't know about the rules for US citizens working over summers in Canada, so that should be checked out.

U of T has one of the best life science programs in the country (my country anyway). Its med school is ridiculously hardcore and competitive (all my best friends are working their way through its admissions now).

It's also more prestigious internationally than Wash. But, if you're concerned mostly with the United States, then why would you go to U of T?
