Dilemma

Hey Guys-
I'm having a bit of a dilemma. Recently I've decided that I think I may want to become a teacher, HOWEVER, Georgetown doesn't have an education major. I LOVE Georgetown, and, although I haven't heard from them yet, does it even make sense for me to pursue Gtown if I want to be a teacher? I applied to BC also, which does have a school of education. But, does anyone know of any options for people who want to go to Georgetown AND want to be a teacher? Thanks!

well you can major in what you want to teach and then go to graduate school.

thats what my mother did.

Why don't you major in what you want to teach? I thought that's what most teachers did.

In the past, a degree (Bachelor's or Master's) in education was required to be a certified teacher in public schools in grades k-12.

The problem with this approach was that a person could become a certified teacher in a middle or upper grade without majoring in or even knowing a great deal about the field in which they were teaching.

Therefore, many if not most states now have "alternate route" programs in which one can become a certified teacher without earning a degree in education. Instead, one is required to major in, and demonstrate knowledge of, the field in which one proposes to teach (in middle or upper grades).

Have you any idea about the level and state in which you would like to teach? If so, contact the state department of education, or visit their website, to see if there is an "alternate route" type of program, and what its requirements are.

Do not simply give up on your preferred school because of this issue!
