hey all. i will be studying pre med at syracuse but i cant choose that as a major.. so i narrowed my major choices down to Psychology, and Physical Therepy. Idealy i wanna go to medical school to be a sports medicine othopedic surgeon, and one day have practice with a sports performance rehab facility/gym to all.. (i know, ambitious). so i feel like having a pt degree would ideal because i can work part time through medical school if time permits.. and the knowlege would benefit in the long run. Psychology degree i think would be more respectable.. and i find it very interesting also. but i dont exactly know yet how benefital to a sports medicine othropedic surgeon.. What are you guys' thoughts??? thanks!

Time will not permit.

Health science majors have the worst success in getting into med school by a substantial margin.

Nothing you learn in undergrad will be of enormous benefit as a physician (pysch for psychiatry, neuroscience for neurology, PT for ortho, etc.). Your training will come from med school and mostly residency.

lol yeah man so i hear… so what major would help with my admission to med school?

Pick a major you enjoy and one that you can do well in.

When they interview you, you want to be able to talk passionately about what you studied and show that you got good grades.

If you take a course just to help with admission, you’re more likely to not enjoy and be able to talk about it well and also it’s easier to get good grades in things that interest you.
However I am only speculating as i’m a freshman premed. I’m sure the other experienced guys here will be able to give you some more legit advice.

However from what I have been told it makes more sense to just try and major in something you enjoy and are good at. Beyond the perquisite courses it shouldn’t matter what else you study. Though doing a non-science major might make it a bit harder to fit in required science courses.

cool thanks… i find psych very interesting so that will be my first choice… what are you majoring in?

I’m currently majoring in biology. I took two years of it in high school and practically lived in our bio classroom.

So far it’s my favorite science and the only course i’m actually doing ok in…well so far, no idea how things will turn out. :P

I recall a premed at my school who was a psychology major and he actually got to do research on how freshman were mentally affected upon entering college and how it related to their health. Pretty interesting stuff.

Generally, liberal arts & sciences majors are best. Beyond that, whatever interests you… basically, you need to do well. That’s really all there is to it at this point in your career. ECs will be critical shortly as well…

Majoring in Psych is great!

I worked all four years during undergrad and saved $$ knowing that I couldn’t really work during med-school - having available cash made a difference to me.
