How is the food/dining at Washu? I hear that the food is really good and nothing like the regular bland college food. But what do you think? Is it all-you-can eat style? Also, is there a large variety of food or is it pretty limited?
I'd love to hear everyone's opinions!
Thanks :)

Great timing for this question–I’m on campus while my son is interviewing. Just ate the most delicious bacon, tomato and cheese panini ever along with a fabulous latte at Holmes Lounge. The only hiccup was trying to find a table. Best campus food we’ve had to date.

I would agree that the food is really good. Holmes especially is a campus favorite. Everything is a la carte; you pay for what you get. Only weekend brunch is buffet style.

Great food. I live connected to the Bears Den so I eat there most. Sometimes I eat at the DUC for lunch around classes. The food does cost more than I thought it would. I ran out of Silver Plan - went over by $200 first semester.

Great late night snacks and the To Go section is good when you don’t have time before a class (I buy it the night before).

Food is definitely better than most other universities.

At Bear’s Den, there’s a wide selection of pasta, Mongolian stir-fry grill, grill, comfort food, sandwich, mexican, Indian food, etc. However, the food does kind of get tiring, which is natural when you eat from the same place every day.

It’s ok. Holmes is really the only actual good food. Everything else is tolerable and some things (Mexican and DUC chinese) are bad. The on-campus Subway keeps me alive. The BD food for the most part is tolerable, but gets very boring. The Loop is the place to go.

Nola you should try the food at other colleges.

Maybe the fact (if it is a fact) that he is from New Orleans is influencing his opinion.

New Orleanian here. I love the DUC mexican/chinese (and I’ve got SD connections so I know what good mexican is like).

NOLAhornets is clearly not the norm. There’s a reason those stations often have obscene lines.

The food was terrible when I went there, but everyone I’ve spoken to lately confirms that it has gotten much better. As others have mentioned, college food is usually not that good, and even if it is you will get tired of eating at the same places all the time. It’s a great school, and the food it pretty good so don’t let that stop you from attending.

The food is excellent, especially for a college campus. There’s a pretty wide variety if you know where to look. A lot of people tend to forget about the grill case items (they’ll have fish and stuff). There’s also a comfort food station (think mom’s cooking) that’s different every time. The DUC has great salads, Holmes Lounge is great, and there’s an Einstein’s bagels in the B-school. Also lots of Starbucks-type cafes around campus (not actually Starbucks though). You’ll probably eventually get tired of eating on campus, as you would anywhere, but there are plenty of restaurants on the Loop that you can walk to. There are also a lot of fantastic restaurants throughout St. Louis if you’re interested in seeing some of the city too. Weekend brunch (11a-2p on Sat/Sun) is all you can eat. I think the Village (upperclassman housing) might have an all-you-can-eat place also, but I’m not entirely sure. The portions are pretty good though, so you definitely won’t go hungry.

The food at washU has been consistently ranked in the top 10 in the nation! That’s saying a lot!

Do any of you know how much kosher and halal food available? I heard there are many Jewish students, so I guess it is easy to find kosher food, but I am a little worried about halal.

@robcol, they talked about the availability of kosher and halal food when we visited in the fall but I couldn’t remember the details so I Googled it. The Bear’s Den has one station where all food items are halal certified. See [Bear's Den | Dining Services | Washington University in St. Louis](http://diningservices.wustl.edu/menuslocationshours/Pages/BearsDen.aspx)

Both kosher and halal food are available in the main undergraduate dining hall. I don’t know the availability across campus as a whole, although I suspect it’s pretty decent.
