Dining Hall question

This is really random lol, but are you allowed to use containers to take food out of the Cornell dining halls? Or are the a la carte places better suited for that?

The reason I ask is that I normally eat "real" food for breakfast, so I thought I might just take food out the night before to eat the next morning...

a la carte places have food that already comes in covered containers or you can order items “to go”

i know trillium has little tote boxes for you to put food in and take to class.

and no you can not use tupperware containers to take food from the dining hall (although many do at their own risk).

you can take a piece of fruit or a piece of dessert though.

Thanks, ResurgamBell! I’ll probably grab food at a la carte places to eat in the morning, then. I thought the dining halls might provide styrofoam or plastic containers, but I guess not.

you might not know this but Cornell and Ithaca is very green…even the containers they use for salads and sandwiches at the a-la-carte places are now “compostable”

many of the dining halls are now trayless (not sure which ones are going to be this fall)

trayless?

how does one get their food to the table?

I had lunch at Trillium during cornell days. That place was crazy. Not sure how I would have gotten food and drink to the table with no tray

yes trillium is crazy. girls probably just go for an easy salad and drink.

i think risley, oakies, west campus are trayless.

i dont know that appel/rpcc are going trayless anytime soon.

risley’s trayless AND composts all food that is uneaten

The all-you-can-eat dining halls don’t have containers and you’re not supposed to take food out of them.

In trayless dining halls you’re supposed to just carry each item of food on its own plate. It prevents you from taking a lot all at once so you have to go back each time you want more food. Cuts down on wasted food.

So, how does “all you can eat” dining work?

What I mean is this.

You go up and get a plate of food and a drink. I assume you swipe your card at the cashier and they deduct a meal from your plan.

Now, you want to go back and get something else because you couldn’t carry it before or you are still hungry or whatever. Do you have to deduct another meal or what?

We didn’t get a chance to visit an all-you-can-eat facility while we visited so I really have no idea.

all you can eat is really rpcc and appel. And its basically how u described it. They swipe your card when u come in and it deducts a meal. Once you’ve done that u can eat as much as you want. They let u take one or two items when u leave, usually fruit or maybe desert.

I totally understand that styrofoam/plastic containers are anti-going-green, lol. I just remember using them at the Brown dining facilities during a summer program, so I thought I’d ask if Cornell did the same.

nope. the all you care to eat works like this:

you swipe your card right as you go in (those without a meal plan pay in cash or CC) and then you go into the dining hall and get your food/find a seat. you can stay there as long or as short as you want without paying again. you cant go to the late lunch dining hall (appel) and then stick around for dinner though (they close the dining halls for cleanup purposes)

The card swiper employees will not let you take out food from the all you can eat dining halls, as they consider that stealing. Though for many reasons I think this should be allowed, it is not. Some people do sneak food out anyway, but should you choose to do the same you should do it at your own risk.

keep in mind, if you WERE to bring in some tupperware and sneak some food and then put that tupperware in your bags… no one would ever check that!

the problem is not getting it out…the problem is being caught dumping the food into the tupper!

^ well, RPCC is rather large - go to the second floor or sit in the corners. it’s really not that hard to circumvent “the system” in this case.
