Dining in NOLA - where NOT to go?

Port of Call is another place I haven’t been in a while, but it is definitely where I would go if I had a hankering for a fabulous burger and a big fat loaded baked potato! It’s definitely worth traveling to the Quarter for in my opinion.

Check out Down the Hatch located at 1921 Sophie Wright PL, just off of Magazine (east of campus). I found this place looking for a later night meal. It is a bar/restaurant. Their hamburgers are especially good, and they deliver to almost anywhere.

The OP wanted to know where NOT to go. And apparently we are having a hard time with these instructions!!!

Well, that is probably my fault. I just thought it was easier to recommend places that have a good track record that are in the main areas most visitors to Tulane frequent (Audubon District, Garden District, CBD and French Quarter) rather than list places to stay away from. After all, they are only going to have a few meals, and only one or two dinners.

Funny thing is i read the thread today and thought the same thing.

Prozack- The fact is the overwhelming majority of New Orleans restaurants are good to very good. If they weren’t they wouldn’t last long here. Most tourist traps are in the FQ. Stay away from the lucky dogs, and anything on Bourbon st except Galatoire’s and Arnauds.

LOL I also thought about this becoming a list of where TO eat!

Can’t really think of a place that I would not go back to. That said, we had mixed experiences at The Pelican Club, and were underwhelmed by Muriel’s on Jackson Square.

Also, I think it was Redfish Grill that was mediocre. That was in 2007 or 2008 though. Might have been Bonefish Grill. Not sure. Sorry. Copelands was a waste too, IIRC. Plenty of better choices.

It had to be Red Fish Grill. The first bonefish grill opened mid 2012 in Metairie. I agree a great meal is hit or miss at RFG and a constant miss at coplands .

It just didn’t make much sense to me to focus on where NOT to eat. There would be no way to know if the list was “complete”. After all, just because a restaurant wasn’t mentioned here as a place to avoid doesn’t mean it is good. Isn’t it just more logical to suggest places where we have had good experiences?

Having said that, I also found Muriel’s less than impressive. I also have consistently heard bad things about the Court of the Two Sisters, if it is still around. Finally, I loved Jacques-Imos the first few times I went, but it was a considerable disappointment the last time I went.

I guess I am a glass half empty girl - I was thinking that with so few meals, I didn’t want to “waste” any. Be assured that this turned out not to be an issue.
After walking over 2 miles after the streetcar unceremoniously dumped us off a few blocks from the hotel (due to construction) and a truncated campus tour, D and I were ravenous. We hiked over to the Camellia Grill, but were too hungry to wait so we had lunch at the place next door and it was very good. Who knew my kid liked fried pickles?
Dinner at Martinique Bistro was excellent - there was a vanilla bean gnocchi with lobster small plate that we shared (along with BBQ oysters) that I would have again in a heartbeat many times over.
Sunday am we embraced our inner tourists and went to Cafe du monde, followed by extreme flea market at the French Market and lunch at the Camellia Grill in the FQ (had to do it after bailing Saturday) - enjoyed it very much. Finally we had dinner at Dante’s Kitchen after reading comments here and it was very very good. I admit to being distracted watching the bartender concoct whatever those drinks were (he was using bottles with eyedroppers and I had no idea what was in them) and the party behind us ordered absinthe, which required the most elaborate set up I had ever seen.
All in all we had a great time. Thanks to all for their suggestions!

PS D loved the school. If they hadn’t blanked us on merit aid it would be a no-brainer.

So glad you had a fun trip. Looked like the weather was decent as well. I have never tried Martinique Bistro so that is definitely on my list for next trip. Glad you enjoyed Dante’s as well, it is always interesting with everything being sourced as locally as possible.
