Dining in Residential Colleges

Can visitors eat at the dining rooms in the res. colleges?

We have a gap of a couple of hrs to grab lunch between the gen tour and SEAS tour next week. If our student wants to check out the dining plan/food, where is the best place to do that for lunch...keeping in mind 38 Hillhouse (admissions local)

and would that be too weird.. a student (and parent in tow)
...we don't know anyone in particular so its not like our student can just meet up as a guest of another student...

Why not eat in the Commons? It gave my son a great “feel” for the student body when we visited.

Is the Commons off Grove–? In the Yale web-site the Commons (SOM) makes me think that is up at the SOM near Sachem…

I was surfing the dining tabs in the website and can’t tell which “commons” this is…based on the map and SOM detail…

Does that mean the res-colleges do not have pros students eating there?

It’s on Grove. I don’t know whether prospective students can arrange to eat in one of the College dining halls. It’s not something we explored. I imagine Admissions could give you a quick answer.

[What we offer, Dining: Yale University](http://www.yale.edu/dining/locations/dininghalls.html)

I would suggest Commons, unless you meet a student who would take you to one of the colleges. It’s pretty impressive, and freshmen generally eat there pretty often. You also don’t have to gain entrance to a residential college courtyard to go there, and you can check out the Woolsey Hall rotunda, and maybe the Beinecke library while you are there.
I think you can just walk in and pay cash, but I’m not sure of that.

Thanks.
This clears up some confusion re the dining web site tabs…
