Is this enough for the entire year and how many meals per day would this equate to? This point system seems horrible compared to the swipe system.

depends on how much you eat...for me, i still have over 1000 points, but i have friends who are down to 200 already. some people already had to buy more dining points (or just use tritonplus) late last quarter. the bad thing is that i heard that ucsd doesn't give back your money if you have dining points left, so for me, i gotta either pig out this quarter, or start buying stuff like chips, water, soda, and drinks in bulks to take back with me whenever i go home XD.

it's all explained here: http://hds.ucsd.edu/diningplan/index.html
you can even d/l a calendar to see how many points you should have by every week for three quarters.
wow, i should be at 533 points right now LOL. right now i'm at Week 3 of Winter quarter ^^;...i wish i could sell some points for money..

1800 is not enough for the entire year if you plan to eat three meals a day (two on weekends, because nothing opens until 10). You will probably find yourself running out sometime in early Spring or the last two weeks of Winter, at which point you can refill your dining points based on how much you think you'll need. They offer a 20% bonus on purchases over $100, so $300 will give you 360 dining points. This can be done at any point during the year, so if you find yourself running low, you don't have to make one major purchase, because you can also make more, smaller purchases to ensure you don't get too many dining dollars.

It depends on the person, but most people will run out, if I recall correctly, you can only spend around $7.50 per day if you want to stay at 1800 points. In essence, this means you can only get water, get maybe one slice of pizza for lunch, and the main entree for dinner. Personally, I think the dining plan at SD sucks, there's no flexibility. Just consider the fact that other UCs base plans are over 2000+ a year. (actually more like 2100 or something) But with that plan, they can get 2 all-u-can-eat meals a day with unlimited drinks.

It also depends on where you eat. Canyon Vista, the Warren dining hall, is the most expensive on campus of the six college-associated cafeterias, and sometimes has main entrees costing upwards of $9 just for the base (no side dishes or drinks). We had one a few days ago that was $12.90. Needless to say, $1800 is entirely inadequate, but [rant] AS is more worried about getting more beer to the 30% of the student population that can legally enjoy it than fixing anything that really needs fixing around here. [/rant]

yeah dorm food is such a ripoff, that's something they gotta fix. it's obvious that SD does this only for that moulah knowing that no one will spend 1800 base points, so they overcharge on everything. but it might be cause i usually eat at canyon vista or earl's place.

1800 is enough for all except the most active athletes, even if you only eat on campus. The people who run out of points in the spring quarter are the type who get drinks with their meals. I have heard that 1800 will be increased to 2100 next year, unfortunately.

@BigRed42: Canyon Vista is not the most expensive on campus. Also, one presidential candidate who won't win does not equal AS.

incrased to 2100? does that mean more food points?

It probably also means $300 more to housing costs

LOL, that was funny

summit and ovt are the most expensive. i've eaten at all of them.

for example: 5.25 or 4.95 for sandwiches (extra for avocado or cheese or whatever), only $4.25 at foodworx. 2.25 for a bowl of pasta at summit, only 1.75 at canyon vista. fries for 1.75 at ovt/summit, only $1 at plaza.

that could be a bad thing-they might increase the prices =(
