Dining Services Program only for PUBLIC?

on the yellow sheet i got in the mail with my housing stuff it says that the 2010 double room rate is 4772 and there is an additional required 1489 "dining services program" fee for eating.

i am wondering is this 1489 fee applicable as well if i do private housing?
and does that just mean i don't get any of the room delivery stuff?

No, it’s not. But you can still buy dorm food if you wish at a higher price.

where would i eat then?

The student unions have a food plan. Or you just go to the various restaurants and food carts near campus and do some microwave cooking in the room. Some might have kitchens too.

ahh okay thanks

The two numbers you are seeing add up to the total mandatory cost of a Res Halls room. They have shown you the breakdown since the food service is an integral part of dorm service although there is no mandatory food purchase amount- a third number listed is most likely the average amount students who live in Res Halls spend there. Students who live in Res Halls get a discount (60%?) on food purchases made at various Res Halls dining services when they use money they put into their food services part of their Wiscard. This disclosure is just showing you how much of the dorm fee goes to the room and how much for food service buildings. Anyone can eat in Res Halls facilities, but those who don’t live there pay more. Consider the the total costs of public/private dorms as well as the convenience and amenities when making your decision.

so you are saying if i went with a private hall (regent, lucky, highlander) i would not have to pay the 1489 “dining services program” each year, BUT my costs at the dining hall would be more expensive?

Correct. You would be on your own. Eating lunch and dinner out student style would cost around $10-$15/day. You also can eat at the campus dorm food service or the student union cafes but don’t get the dorm resident discount.

The dorm food prices for non-residents are not bad.

Dorm food is also good with variety- see the menus on the Res Halls website. You can even order delivered pizza subs for a nominal delivery charge, but only to the Res Halls, ie public dorms. When budgeting consider ALL costs.

oh okay thanks SO much for the input!
yeah i think i am probably going to go public dorms now
because the private seemed cheaper actually without the dining services fee, but now that i see the food is more expensive it may not be worth it
