I applied early and I'm pretty confident I'll get in but somehow I left the research of the tidbits til now. I'd just like any comments on the food. The diet I'll be coming from is one of a 10 variety cycle of school food, my mom's various broths (good but too familiar after 17 years), and home-cooked rice. I had a taste of college food at Lynchburg College. I really liked their food but my digestive system did not. If you could give me a general impression or a comparison, that'd be great. Explaining the meal plan would also be nice (unlimited vs set meals).

Uh-Oh. I will not comment.

lol, it sounds like the food isnt that great

i will comment

I went to Lynchburg COllege for gov school of math sci and technology prior to coming to UVA. i would say they are about the same....both Ohill and Newcomb dining halls have huge variety of food.........but sometimes they are not cooked very professionally. cafeteria food is never good.

Yeah, I was also at Lynchburg for Governor's School. I didn't find the food great overall, but there was always something I liked. It's def better than what I get at my high school. The amount of freedom and choice was more than I usually get so I was pretty happy about it. Thanks for telling me what to expect.

I'd still like to know what I should do about the meal plan. Ideally I'd want three meals everyday so even the 15 meals thing looks a little small. Of course the reality may be that I don't eat that many meals(e.g. often skipping breakfast). A better way to put it may be what is the advantage of fewer meals and more plus dollars.

I really think the Unlimited meal plan is unnecessary. You'll be able to swipe in seven times a day, but even if you occassionally had the urge to go grab a piece of fruit or something it wouldn't be worth it since the amount of plus dollars you get is pretty low (under 100, I think). It would have been much more worth it if they gave fewer swipes a day (4, maybe) and more plus dollars. However, it's all dependent on your eating habits. If you seriously think you'll be eating 3 meals a day, then you should probably go with the Unlimited anyway. I tend to skip breakfast, so the 15 meal plan is a nice option for me.

As for plus dollars, they work in a variety of places. I'm sure you've seen the Pav in Newcomb Hall assuming you've visited. Also, plus dollars work at the two relatively nearby The Castle (old dorms) and Crossroads (New Dorms -- O hill dining hall). I live almost right next to the dining hall, so it's really helpful to just be able to quickly go get something to eat in the middle of the night. If you feel like you won't be doing this very often, though, then the uses will be diminished. Plus dollars also work at some other places, like the Alderman Cafe in the Alderman Library, but I think these aren't as big factors in deciding whether or not you'd want more plus dollars. The other advantage to plus is that there aren't any taxes on your purchases, which does build up over a semester in cost.

You still have awhile to choose, so you may want to get a preliminary idea of what you'll be taking in the Fall so you can find some sort of eating habit that will fit a meal plan well.
