I am just wondering what suggestions folks have for a group of people dining at or near Hyatt Place for a Monday night. People will be fairly low budget and a range of tastes converging at the hotel. I’m not familiar with the area–at the hotel or a very short walk (or short uber/lyft ride would probably be OK). Thanks for suggestions, as none or us live near the area. It will be everyone having a separate check.
For eaters with palate for interesting food, there is the Indian restaurant Indigo at 3rd and K which is casual and food is delicious. The new Laos in Town across the street from Indigo also terrific and nicer inside ambiance, but very spicy. Not sure about Monday hours. I’ve had good meals at the fast casual Seoul Spice.that is near hotel. And a short metro away to Gallery Place will give you a ton of options, including Jaleo, Zatinya, and so many more. I’ll look to see what some more conventional options near there might be and report back.
Short Uber ride that would appeal to a broader range of people is Busboys and Poets. If you want to come down to H Street either on foot or uber, the fast casual Farmbird has great chicken options, Fresca Tacqueria at 7th and H NE has take away and seating. The Shake Shack in Union Station is good and has upstairs seating if you are going on the early side. I don’t recommend walking from Union station if it will be dark. Not because it is inherently unsafe, but because I find it uncomfortable later with very aggressive panhandlers outside the station.
Union Market nearby has options inside and is lots of fun. Monday may be more limited. If open Monday, my choice would be Stellina Pizzeria. That place is amazing and you can dine in. Pizzas on pricey side, but so is everything in DC. After reviewing all the options I just put down, I think these two are best if open Monday since you can walk from hotel and food far better than hotel food.
Farmers & Distillers
I like Nandos - fun place - a step up from fast food but not expensive
^^ I was also going to mention Nandos. Easy, good food, casual for chatting. Not fancy.
Thanks! The guy at the hotel said the only two places within a 5 minute walk are Seoul Spice and Moe’s southwestern grill. Sounds like if folks are willing to metro or Uber, many more options.
The walk to nandos is about a mile so closer to 20 minutes. I am a city walker, I would not consider it too far to walk a mile for dinner…
Is this the Hyatt on New York Avenue? If so, I’d suggest hopping on the Metro at the NoMa-Gallaudet stop (a block away) to head over to the Gallery Place/Chinatown area. Lots of very good restaurants around there, including multiple Jose Andres restaurants (Zaytinya is a personal favorite).
^^^Zaytinya is great! We went there to celebrate my son-in-law’s graduation (SAIS-Johns Hopkins) a few years ago.
For pretty good pizza I recommend Pi Pizzeria at 910 F street.
Yes, it’s the Hyatt at NY Ave. Thanks for all these thoughts.
It’s probably easiest for the 1st meal if we just choose something a short 5 minute walk from the hotel as some folks may have walkers and/of supplemental O2 and not too mobile.
Moe’s is fine. It isn’t my favorite but it meets your within 5 minute criteria.
You can walk to stellinas in 5 minutes! While I like Seoul spice, it’s more fast food like and stellinas is amazing. You just walk up Florida avenue 2 blocks. It’s next to the trader Joe’s. Which is a good stop if you want snacks for cheap
I just saw the supplemental oxygen comment. It’s a long 2 blocks. Google and see if it works
Hmmm, Stellinas sounds great and may appeal to more people. Those who are really mobility challenged may opt to remain in the hotel, but for everyone else, two blocks should be manageable. Actually, I’ve walked for hours using supplemental portable oxygen–it really depends on the fitness of the patient. I don’t know many of these folks, so don’t really know who is showing up–patients and caregivers and providers.
Dang–just read that they’re closed Monday, so that’s out. It’s beginning to sound like Moe’s–something non-controversial and at reasonabl-ish price points.
There’s a vegan spot around the corner from stellinas that is fun, Shouk, open Monday. Fast casual Israeli food but vegan and there’s seating. And a very good bakery (Pluma), but likely closed for dinner.
Yum—that sounds interesting.
Moe’s is a fast food place like Chipotle. That may be fine, given your group is low budget but just wanted to make sure you were aware that’s the type of restaurant it is.
